Classics in the Walled Garden
Wednesday
10th July 2013
From 4pm
www.petermadden.co.uk

Hello all,

Classics in the Walled Garden

I’m pleased to advise you all that the 5th Classics in the Walled Garden will be held on Wednesday the 10th July. Last years event attracted around 650 cars and raised over £2,000 for charity/good causes.
Classics in the Walled Garden is an evening picnic within and around the historic Walled Garden on the Luton Hoo Estate. As in recent years a part of the Walled Garden has been taken by a semi-permanent marquee. I shall be allocating spaces as entries are received, the first 150 entrants will be inside the Walled Garden, the next 150 in the area immediately outside the Walled Garden with the remaining places in the paddock field nearby. In 2012 all of the 150 spaces inside the Walled Garden went within 24 hours of the launch of the event.

The event is aimed at cars and motorcycles aged 20 years and older, with more modern classics accepted at my discretion. There will be parking available, outside the Walled Garden on payment, on the night for spectators and classics which haven’t booked.

On the night we will have music, a licensed bar, and catering facilities. I will update all entrants with an email nearer the time. I’m only sending paper entries for this event to those few entrants who attended last year and for whom I have no email addresses. So if you have friends without email who may be interested please pass this on to them.
Luton Hoo Walled Garden is set in a beautiful estate with entry from the New Mill End Road along a lovely tree lined drive. You can read some of its history at; www.lutonhooestate.co.uk. Please note there is NO entry to the Walled Garden from the main entrance to the hotel & golf club on the A1081. An access map can be found on the website. Access to the estate is gated and will be closed during the day. There will be NO ENTRY to the estate before 4pm.

Proceeds from Classics in the Walled Garden will be divided between The Walled Garden Project, and the Jumbulance Trust, http://www.jumbulance.org.uk/

Costs of putting on this event keep rising, toilets alone last year cost over £600! So in order to raise the amount we can donate to charity I hope you’ll forgive an increase in the rally fee to £6 per entry. This year I will again be accepting payment of rally fees via Paypal for those of you who prefer to pay that way. Simply email me your completed form and make a payment to my email address. Please use Classics in the Walled Garden as the reference and include your registration number. I will provide the envelope and stamp to send your pass out. There will be an additional fee of £1 to cover Paypal fees, postage and envelopes.

I’m always in need marshalls so if you can spare a couple of hours of your time on the day please let me know. I’m tremendously indebted to all of you who have helped over the years as without that support these events simply couldn’t take place.

As in 2012 I’m planning on a tombola to raise extra funds, if you work for a company that might be interested in donating some product or merchandise please get in touch. On the website you can see a list of our sponsors.

BUMP :D It's this Weds!

The plan for us was to take both cars but the Plymouth's (hopefully) having its vinyl replaced Mon/Tues, so will depend how that goes. Either way, we'll be there, hopefully meet one or two others from here...

Pretty sure you can turn up on the day Pete, and park in the 'overflow' car park - still a good location just outside the 'walled garden' bit, if you were thinking of bring the Bee.

If the Satellite's not ready, we'll have a spare ticket, so could arrange to meet up an let you have it? We hope to get there between 4 - 4.30

Failing that, I'd try and blag your way into one of the areas set aside for classics (the aforementioned overflow car park) - I'm sure they wouldnt turn you away if you waived a tenner (entry fee) under their noses ;)

Turns out this is the same night as the MMA meet at Hooks Cross, as Demon James has reminded me, so how about a venue change if it is OK to just turn up, which RobTwin says it is??

Hi Matt - I've just emailed the organiser to ask if you can just turn up on the day without a ticket and not get dumped in the public car park.

Dont forget it starts at 4pm and people tend to drift away from as early as 6pm, but most are still there till between 8-9pm.

We were intending to leave by around 8pm and go to the Hooks Cross pub as soon as we can after that. We've already arranged to meet Muzzy Dave there as he's having a couple of tyres off us, plus Paul Knight says he was going to go, so we've arrange to see him too.

Sounds like a nice idea Matt, but anyone else who was planning on meeting at the pub but doesnt know about this will wonder where everyone else is, if we're all over at Luton :-k

Can I suggest.... anyone who can get to Luton by, say, 6pm, does so and stays there till 8ish, then head over to the usual monthly meet at Hooks Cross....
and anyone who cant get there that early, just meets at the Hooks Cross pub as per usual?

Would that work? :?

Got this reply from the organiser, Peter Madden:

"Yes they can turn up on the day and have a space in the paddock which is Classics only. Please ask them to have £6 handy on arrival if possible."

I must have remebered the entry fee incorrectly, thinking I paid £10 per car. So there you go, I've already saved you £4 each

Anyhoo, for anyone thinking of going, see below Final Entrant's Instructions, as emailed to all who pre-booked:

I have highlighted (in bold) the note about entry & exit routes, as they've swaped them for this year. The maps below should help.

Dear Entrant,

Thank you for your entry, with the night rapidly approaching, a final email to advise you all of facilities available on the night. There are currently around 400 entrants, the first 150, green passes, within the Walled Garden, the second 150, red passes, immediately outside the Walled Garden and the remainder in a separate field specifically for classic vehicles.

Please ensure that your entry pass is clearly displayed in the windscreen of your car on arrival at Luton Hoo, motorbikes please try to display your pass as best you can! Please leave your pass on display until we have parked you up so stewards know where to direct you to. Please park as directed by the marshals, if you wish to park with friends please arrive together and we will park you together. Please do not try to save space for later arrivals, this ends up as dead space that no one can use.

Access

PLEASE NOTE; This year to assist with traffic flow the entry and exit routes have been reversed. If you are coming from the Luton Road, continue past the 1st set of gates on your left and enter about 1/2 mile along through the Farm Road entrance, it will be signed. Exit will be via Lime Tree Drive.

Facilities

Catering facilities this year will be provided by the on site caterers Hoos Food. There will be a licensed bar, with real ales, including local ales, cider and wine and Pimms. This year we will again have a charity Tombola alongside the control point. I am most grateful to all those companies and individuals who have kindly contributed, many of whom are listed at the end of this email.

You are of course most welcome to bring your own picnics and refreshments, but not barbeques. Where possible please bag your litter and place it in the bins provided or take it home with you. Well behaved dogs on leads are allowed on the Estate.

Music

Music this year will again be provided by Graham David who will play two one hour sets in the Walled Garden between 6 and 9pm. www.grahamdavid.org

Jumbulance

One of this years charities will have a Jumbulance at the event, you will be most welcome to look around to see the superb work they do. www.jumbulance.org.uk/

Toilets
This year there will be access to toilets in the Conservatory within the Walled Garden in addition to toilets near the Paddock field.

Safety

Please drive with care on the Estate, and slowly within the Walled Garden. It has been cut and rolled but the ground will not be as smooth as Harpenden Common. Be directed by the marshals, and watch out for pedestrians and picnickers when manoeuvring your car.

Plaques

As usual plaques will be available from the Control Point, a white pop up gazebo, which will be at the southern point of the Walled Garden. If your pass does not have an L preceding the number then your entry was received in time to qualify for a plaque. Please collect your plaque before 7.30pm. If your entry was received late, i.e. it has an L before the number then please come to the Control Point after 7.30pm and any remaining plaques will be released on a first come first served basis.

Spectators

For any of your friends, family, or acquaintances who are planning to come under their own steam, they are most welcome and there is a separate area available for spectator parking. There will be a charge of £3 per adult.

Volunteers

I am as always massively indebted to the kind souls who agree to marshall for me on the night. I come up with these ideas and then convince them they should help. If you can spare an hour or more of your time, on the evening as a marshall, please contact me for further information.

The future

If all goes well and everyone enjoys the event there is no reason why this shouldn’t be repeated. So, as always, I welcome your feedback both positive and constructive.

Looking forward to a good evening.

Peter Madden

Thank you Rob, great pics, and great cars. Favourite looks to be the 240Z I think, or maybe the yellow Lotus Europa.
Will try to get there next year!
