So. Here it is. Never be afraid of looking a complete tool so long as you have learned something...

The biggest lesson here is "never eliminate the bloomin obvious".

Wait for it...

wait...

(big pause for effect)

The (disconnected and unused) choke had jammed on.

Honestly, I'm not kidding. All the parts we changed, the people involved, the pouring over diagrams and wiring, testing electrics etc. Flaps were jammed shut on top of the carb. Everytime we dried and tried it flooded up...

So - here is the sequence as I summize it happened.
While cold I blipped it too much while driving along the high street and it backfired through the carb which kicked the choke shut. After that I was doomed... A potential 5 second repair turned into an epic.

So, live, learn, blush a bit and move on. I keep telling myself I may be a tool, but at least I'm a tool in a 68 charger right ? :)

PS - Oh, and yes, it now has a new rod fixed in place and the choke flaps cannot move ! :)

Strip the whole choke mech out as it only take five minutes.
