I am in the progress of the finial job on my 72 Challenger. I ordered and in the finial phase of connecting up the A/C plumbing and just as a finial check I would like to inspect the Evaporator core one tube seems loose, anyway.... can I remove the Heater box assembly without removing the complete dash, is it a fairly simple task?
Cheers,

I did, several times on my Polara but probably have a little more room under the dash than you have. it is simple if you follow the steps carefully. One bit of advice though...dont follow the workshop manual because it is confusing.
A guy from the States on a C body forum helped me out with a simple step by step guide which I will re post for you when I can later... I would imagine its similar on your car....
Cheers Steve

This is the reply I got....ignore the core removal bit...
I just went through this procedure on my 68 300, basically reomve the 3 screws holding the blower motor on from out side the fire wall, remove all sections of heater hose from firewall side, recover Freon form air conditioning system, disconnect expansion valve and other lines from fire wall side, remove the water valve from passenger side foot well, remove the ash tray, remove the plastic piece that feeds the dash vents from the center of the heater box, disconnect the wires that go to the heater box resistor, disconnect the vacuum lines at the connector that is approx 6" from the heater control, remove glove box, remove 2 screws from lower part of fresh air intake in far right of heater box, remove 5 nuts from firewall side to let heater box come back inside car, remove right side lower dash bolt, remove nut from heater box brace(brace runs from top of inside firewall to top of heater box on right side) pull unit out from under dash while pulling back on lower edge of dash.
Here is the reply I got and it worked....It details getting the box out so just ignore the core bit....
It took me about 2 hours to get it out , it then took another hour to get the box apart, the manual says you can change the heater core in the car , but I honestly don't think its possible, some of the bolts are impossible to get to while it is installed. In addition the two pipe that run from the box to outside the firewall were seized to the heater core, i had to turn them cherry red with a cutting torch to get them apart, I ruined the o rings in the process, you can replace them with #6 air conditioning O rings ...
I wound up pulling the whole dash so i could fix the wiring that someone had hacked and to re-insulate the fire wall ... here is a pic of the box reinstalled before the dash went back in
