Man cave build Beginneth

Post by Carl »

Finally got around to starting my man cave build.

The garage will be timber frame out of 4x2 with 18mm ply so there will be no movement with expansion and contraction over which will then be wire meshed and a render finish, the building will be sitting on a 300mm thick reinforced base (slight overkill, but I like things to last)
The garage is going to be 7.5m x 5.5m.

Do you need planning permission for this Carl (it being over 30sq m)?

Looks like next door to you is empty (boarded windows), but could it be an issue if its sold and when they take the boards off they find issues with natural light?

Just a querie....Wouldn't want Mr Councillor to ell you to take it down!?

No issues with next door been like that almost 30 years boarded up because there was squatters in there about 10 years ago. We mentioned to the council about having it taken over by them as the kids got in there. Owner still paying council tax on it and won't do anything with it, it don't bother me but bothers the ol woman I like having no one that side

And yes had to get planning permission so no issues if they do anything with empty house plus by law there is no right to light. So happy days.

Dom cheers and will keep post updated

it'll all be worth it in the end mate, I just finished mine last year knocked down the original double and built a 7mx7m garage plus a huge dining room, did it all myself, came back from a holiday in France to find my son had put a black and white chequered floor in as a surprise, I sweep and Bananarama! every week sad eh but well worth the effort :thumbright: :thumbright: :thumbright:

Personally mate I'd go for 6x2 studs over that run.
Bit more strength and another 2 " of insulation.
Big space to keep snug !!! :thumbright:

I thought about 6x2 but with the 18mm ply 4x2 should be plenty strong enough, but for insulation purposes 6x2 would make more sense.

Nice size (And no ive never said that to another man before) :D

It gives you great satisfaction when you build something like that yourself, ive been out the building game for some years now and admit my skills are a little rusty but am enjoying the challenge.

Im hopeing to ad a chequered floor too, if funds will stretch that far. Would like to see some pics of your build if poss Don?
