Anyone tried molasses & water for rust removal?

There was a bit of talk about it on a MOCGB thread a while back:

Some of them missed the point that it ONLY works when mixed with water at the right ratio as the molasses then turns to phosphoric acid- the same stuff that DE-OX is based on (also available in small quantities in rhubarb leaves, that's why they're slightly poisonous!)
I'll give it a shot when my much-more-expensive DE-OX runs out!

same as Coke

Phosphoric acid

"only the real thing"

you used to be able to buy it from school/uni/hospital/pharmacy suppliers

these days they think you are a terrorist and there is all kinds of disposal stuff to think about/sign up to

so its a bit too much like hard work.

you could have a chat with these geezers

I have used potassium hydroxide heated to 90 grad which was a step up from Phosphoric acid good but don't think your going to buy that at boots again it was granule base mixed with water.

Have also used Phosphoric acid but this will not remove any filler or rubber sealant. And take ages to get paint off. This is what they use to get paint of aluminium as potassium hydroxide will melt aluminium.

I also tried to get old chrome off my bumpers in both solutions but didn't work.

coke was used to pour over diesel injector when there are (coked) in the cylinder head. Pour on coke leave for 24hr.

Also put your gold and silver jewellery in a glass of coke for 2 days.It will be like brand new brother

after all my work I would now simply drop parts off to be blasted sand, nut shells , soda depending on how delicate.

cheaper safer and what do you do with the old acid ;)
