Torque Convertor Part Numbers and which one to go in 440 B B

Post by GranSport »

Hi,
I have a choice of two 727 boxes lying around in the garage. One needs to go in my 69 Road Runner with built 440.

One box is coded as a 383 built 1968 4 barrel with a 10.75 dia convertor.
One box is coded 440 non HP built 1974 with 11.75 dia convertor

1st Question:
Is there a part number stamped some on the Torque Convertor to confirm the stall speed of both? Not found it yet

2nd Question:
Which Torque Convertor do you think would be better for my 69 Road Runner with a 440 and Purple Cam?
I was going to put the 74 box (assuming it has stronger internals) in with the 10.75" higher stall Torque Convertor. Would that be the right choice for the street with occassional strip passes?

Thx
Eddie

either transmission will work fine if ok condition,
go with the smaller diameter converter,
what ever box you use remove pan fit new filter adjust the bands fresh oil its normal to have a little bit of crud in the pan and on the filter if there is a lot it has a problem,

if one or the other has stood a real long time chances are the lip seals have gone hard/brittle so wont have a very long life,

727 Choice

Went with the '74 727. Used the smaller Torque Convertor. Dropped the pan and all good and pretty clean. Adjusted bands but now decided to fit the Transgo TF2 kit as I had it lying around.
Separator plate drilled and valve body drilled. 1/2 way through. Excellent instructions and seems clear so far which is good as I am a complete novice with gearboxes.

Looking forward to those chirpy shifts.
