Found a few more problems, after the broken Rocker

Post by GTXJim »

Went to refit my rockers after breaking one last Sunday, Dave Billideau kindly lent me one to get me back on the road, and noticed that the roller lifter below the broken rocker, seemed to have collapsed, so had to take the head off, anyway found the problem, the centre cup had popped out of the roller-lifter, and was sitting next to it? No damage at all! so popped it back in the lifter, then had a closer inspection on the pistons, I could see the inlet valves have been kissing the edge of the cut outs on the pistons, So did a petrol test on all the valves, and all but one was prefect, so just had to lap one valve in. So will have to take the other head off and with the dremel slightly relieve the edge of the valve cut out, When we built the motor I did a play-dough valve clearance test, and all was good?? So all in all if the cup hadn't came out I wouldn't have a clue about the pistons touching, So hopefully I can just get away with a set of head gaskets, I will pull the oil pan and check bearings and inspect the system one filter for debris, fingers crossed all is ok.

Sorry to see that Jim, might not be so bad once you stripped it down.

For what it worth, I always like to break the hard corner/edge of the valve relief area, to take away potential hot spots

nice one jim, and dont get stuck in that mindset about bearings and rings etc, if they look ok reuse them we have to get back to basics you really dont have to have new all the time,
when i was a kid had that 3 litre capri got the crank knockin had no money for new bearings crank grind etc etc so pulled it all out leaving heads on etc went to the local scrappie pulled a 3 litre mtr off the scrap engine pile pulled the crank and all bearings out just kept bearings as they came out journels and pairs banged the lot in my engine job done the mtr used to get spun up hard take on any comers never lost and loads of trips to newquay towing a caravan, i myself sometimes lose sight of reusing some parts with the inbuilt fear that used is not good enough, hope its all good matey, ;)

Yes, home made, goes under the dragster style oil pan, that's why the K member has been modified also, took a bit of working out but works a treat. :thumbright:
