M/C question.

Post by Mossy68 »

Quick question chaps.
Last year I left my house in the Coronet Drove 20 yards. Braked for turning. Another 20 yards and braked for turning. Another 20 yards to traffic lights which were red but when I braked my foot went straight to the floor !!!
I managed to pump them and they quickly returned.
Obviously I turned around when I could and went home.
I then had the whole braking system checked at GS Autos and found no leaks etc. this lead me to believe that the M/ C had a fault ?
I drove the car about 5 miles to its garage and had no further problems.

I had planned to fit a new M/C and booster over winter , but due to weather funds are low but would love to have the old girl out again this year.
So. Your views please gents.
Not trying to cut corners. But have I maybe overlooked something ?
Would appreciate your advice

if the cylinder had a fault i'd expect the fault to be obvious all the time. i mean its just some rubber plungers on a rod. surely they work or they don't

first i'd check the danger valve. if you car has one
its in the master cylidner or the distibution block under the spade connector for the brake dash light wire
undo the switch with the spade or bullet connector about 6 mm and then do it up. that should re-seat the piston

your brakes might be working now only on the circuit that didn't have the problem...

and i'd dump all the fluid and replace, if its contaminated with water, that water can boil and fill the system with water vapour bubbles, which like any gas is compressible. Once the system cools agian bubbles disolve back into the fluid and that flkuid will give good brakes for a number of stops until it gets hot again.

i'd check my drum brakes to see if the shoes are binding on the backing plates. the shoes rest on 4 supposedly flat spots on the back plate.

but obvioulsy be careful.....!

Air or water in the system I would guess.

As Dave said dump the lot and have the fluid replaced/bled.

All brakes were checked. Can't remember if fluid was changed though.
