Ring and pinion choice ?

Post by Mossy68 »

Am I right in thinking that a race type ring and pinion will be of a " softer", less brittle steel than that of a street application ?
And therefore not suitable for street use as it would wear quickly ?

Also would a 742 type pinion be only 1 type ( spline size etc ) ??

Thanks :)

741 and 2 are 10 spline, 489 is 29.

Yes, Race only gears are softer so they are not brittle but the downside is that they are supposed to wear more....so not great for street use.....a search on Summit Racing will give you a quick heads up on availability...

Mind you, we have a set of 3.91:1 gears for a Dana 60 and NOBODY makes that off the shelf, so you can get any custom gears if you wish........

Don't know, but why would you bother? Plenty of choice out there. These came out of a Pro Mod back in the day where they had very specific needs. You need to balance the gear choice off against tyre height options...

Just wondered mate.
Sticking with stock tyre height to keep stock appearance so 3.55:1 should liven it up a bit.

3.55 seem to be the best street strip combo :thumbright:

Even 3.23's will liven it up from 2.76 Gary....3.55 may be a bit ott for that motor especially if your converters higher than stock stall?, that motor will probably be done by 4600rpm from the little I know of it.

No nicer sound than a Mopar V8 cruising at 4000 rpm on the motorway. :D

Jeez, deep pockets needed for that run Dave.......fuel was only around .65p p/litre back then for me, went to Tony Dicksons in it....wasn't the most enjoyable trip.

You are talking 4-5 tanks of fuel to get to SPR, few runs, and back.

I was getting 13mpg on the motorway from the six pack though. :thumbright:
