Bumpy roof, lead shift or what?

Post by MilesnMiles »

An odd one this! When I first got my car I noticed some raised bumps over the rear of the roof where the C pillar drops away. I assumed the worst (sound familiar  ) and thought it was rust.
However, as i have no headliner I could easily see, touch and inspect the inside of the roof where it joins the C pillar/section.

The bumps can be clearly felt from the inside, but no rust, holes or anything obvious.
I thought i'd read that these cars used lead lining for this section of the roof and that over time it can shift somewhat..
Anyone know?
My concern is that I would like to know whats involved for rectifying it before I fit my headliner.

pics show the ripples/bumps. Somewhat exaggerated by the light.

I would bet that the lead plumb has blown over time. The tinning agent reacts and eventually comes away...

I think Jem calls it "Patina".........

That's a better shot Miles, I agree with Pete, it looks like the original leading has blown...if you are leaving the original paint in situ, I would leave it as it is, but if I was repainting it, I'd dig the lead out and re-lead it or fill it with Evercoat Rage Gold...that would soon get rid of the patina!
The pump don’t work coz the vandals took the handles.

I would guess at water ingress in the spot welded joint. Rust has formed, expanded but not shown as holes (yet). It would also lift the lead but not part it from the steel.

Thanks for the info chaps. Presumably to would need a half sensible body shop to sort that if I wanted to paint it.

Latil, could be rust based problem, but I really can push hard on the inside without anything looking to give way like you mitt expect. Hasn't changed in 18 months either;quite odd.

I'm leaving it alone for now. Never seen it before. Took the car out for a sunny coast road trip today 8-)
Roof was still there when I got home!
