Yeah with my Billy being a rescue he was a nightmare when I first got him. Thought I was never going to be able to let him off the leash.
But plenty of socialising with other dogs settled him down and after a few months he became confident and gentle with most other dogs he meets. He has plenty of regular "mates" he meets up with too.
In fact he is so laid back now that any dogs smaller than him can "attack" him and he just stands there without flinching as if he is saying "Is that all you've got?" and a simple "f-off" growl is usually all he gives out.
I still have to be careful with him if we are passing any German Shepherds or any really big tall dogs that might intimidate him because he will either "test" them with a lunge or try to hump them to see if they will submit to that. In particular he does not like dogs that still have their balls. Actually he gets a big kick out humping big dogs. He has this look on his face like "yeah you are my bitch now son". I think it is from him doing "time" in the shelter.
But on the whole I can be pretty confident with him off the lead with any dogs we come across.

Funnily enough. I got a call from a fella I built a new house for in 2007. It was on 12 acres and so he kept dogs. Had 2 Canna Corsas ( Italian mastiffs ) and 1 bull mastiff , who became my friends during my time working there.
He is now a foster home for large dogs. So I get a call saying I had to come and see the latest dog he has taken in. After I had seen the pic he sent I will have to go and say hello to the chap. Shame I can't afford to keep wifey at home or I'd be coming home with him !!!

MOPAR - Move Over Power Arriving Rapidly
Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy My brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay My Mopar upon you
