Small block 727 slipping ?

I have noticed recently, as I'm using my Dart more, that when it gets hot, after about 20 min of driving, the gearbox seams to slip ?
I happens when it changes automatically or manually from 2nd to 3rd , the rev rise momentarily, as it changes.
I don't have much knowledge with auto boxes.
Could this be an adjustment of the band ?
Is this a easy job ?
Any ideas would be welcomed.

check fluid level.
check the rod from carb to trans is fitted and adjusted correctly,
check and adjust front band,if all the above checks out ok the high gear clutch is toast,,,,,,,,

Fluid level and cable adjustment seam ok,remember I had the won't go into 3rd gear problem, you advised me on.
So I need to check the band adjustment, and hope that sorts it out.

Hi Johnny...keep us updated please mate...especially with details of how you go through the process of adjusting the bands from a practical point of view. Manual describes how to but would be great to have your description etc...

Band adjustment is easy. Just nip them up (72 inch pounds is the setting but that is just a gentle nip up not much more than finger tight) and then back off the kickdown band 2.25 turns and the low/reverse 2 turns. Job done.

The only tricky bit is that low/reverse band adjuster is inside the box. You have to remove the sump and get transmission oil up your sleeve. :thumbright:

Well I adjusted the front band up, as said 72inch pounds, about 8.5nm, backed off 2 and a quarter turns. Easyish to get to , needed a square drive socket.
Had done a few road tests ,and seamed better, but not 100 %, still had a little slip when it got hot. An increase in revs , just before it changed into
3rd.
Anyway tonight I thought I would give it WOT, the beans from a standing start to see how it liked it.
Well it didn't, seamed to slip in 2nd, and when it changed into 3 at about 80mph, it slipped so bad it nearly valve bounced, I had to get of the loud peddle pretty quick.
So it may be buggered, was ok back to normal small slip into 3rd when driven normally on the way home.
So I've ordered a 727 repair book :roll:

Any ideas, extremely welcome :thumbright:
I did look at Daves thread to identify my 727 from the numbers , but may need some help , as I didn't manage the task

If any one can help me identify the 727 trans, what its out of , year of build etc.

The numbers on the side by the cable linkage look like.

2K 898864 5211 7998

The first digits are hard to see clearly, so may need to have another look if they don't make sense.

I have a receipt that came with the car for an 727, but I can't make out what it says,it looks like dodge van ? but thats it.

I have had another closer look , and the numbers are as you have found , with a 3 in front of the 898864

I think you have cracked it :thumbright:

its Bananarama! because the high gear clutch is worn the shift timing has gone it releases the 2nd gear band but the high gear clutch is not applying quick enough hence the flare/slip,,,,,,

I always tend to look for truck numbers on small block pattern 727's , after checking both the Coronet and truck numbers they both have identical box's !!
Truck one is the one it left the factory with.

As Dunc has just confirmed , unfortunately it sounds shot.
I would recommend letting Dunc rebuild your box as there are some easy mistakes to make that can do serious damage !!!
( a so called gearbox expert rebuilt the coronet one prior to my ownership and made a silly mistake that slaughtered the whole box. )

I have bought a book, and would really like to rebuild it myself, as I have never done one before.
I can import all the bits, and I 'll look forward to doing it.
I have seen some Alto kits on USA ebay.I can build it up to take some more power, use a bolt in over run clutch, and a shift improver kit.
It will be a challenge over the winter, after I've completed the rear axle build.
If I bugger it up , i'll have to get another one :lol:

love that idea Johnny...go for it matey!!! Might be worth as king Dunc about what is the best route for quality parts etc. These books were made for DIY so no reason why a man of your calibre cant nail it. Blue knows his stuff with transmissions aswell :thumbright:
