DIY Tracking?

Post by GJUK »

Hi,

My car pulls quite hard to the left, I don't really want to faff about taking it to HiQ or Kwikfit for them to abuse the car.

What parts do I need to adjust on an abody to tweak the wheels back to 0?

I've seen the 'string' method which I'd like to give a go!

Thanks

Jon

There's a huge range of stuff on ebay like http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Trackace-Lase ... 20e800cfab

Don't know if any good at all but not much more than kwik fit price to buy it.

Sorry I should have been more clear.

Which bits on the car do I 'tweak' to adjust the tracking?

Thanks

Tie / track rods.

Have you a workshop manual yet Jon, maybe worth getting a copy version or cd rom?

There's a down and dirty method to get you in the ballpark. Chalk mark the centre of the tread on both tyres. Measure between the marks and roll the car forward until your marks appear at the back, measure again and compare. adjust and repeat until you get the same measurement back and front. Set up the valiant this way and it drives fine, we'll see how close I got when I have the whole front end aligned after the brake swap.

I set mine with spirit level, string and advice on the camber castor, i.e. don't use factory settings.
Advice is top wishbone bushes, back one all the way in, front all the way out to get some castor, then adjust front one to set camber, which is where I used a spirit level and straigjt edge vertically on the rim to get it vertical or just in from vertical about 1.5mm.
I then measured across the treads front and rear to get about 1/16th toe in.
I then took it to Roger at Monkfish to get it spot on and he said I was not far out.
Even so, the small amount he did adjust made a big difference.
