Your stock damper should have some other marks to about 10deg before/after but that won't help you with total timing with that light, its tape or exchange that light for one with a dial on top.

Before I buy one of these timing tapes, can I just check something.

If i have the markings of TDC and 10 degrees (advanced and retarded)

Can I not just measure the distance between the 0 and 10 and add my own 20 and 30 markings. Then divide the space between the 0 and 10, allowing me to mark 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9?

Those marks are normally on a tab on a stock timing cover not the damper, that only has TDC and 180 marks if stock, buy the tape and do it correct, its important to get your initial and total spot on.

You will need accurate markings up to 20 or 25 degrees and one at 34 degrees.

This is why a proper timing light makes life so much easier because with one of those you only need the TDC ( 0 degrees) mark.

I can't buy one as I need to know the diameter of my 400 big block damper :-( and as im out of the country at the moment I can't second guess it :(

Big block dizzys spin Anticlockwise, is this correct? So to advance timing you would turn the dizzy clockwise.

Which way do the cranks spin please?

Do you not think you need some help here ? Knowing crank & Dizzy rotations are quite important elements ...

Do like Dave said, borrow a decent timing light. Alternatively don't buy the tape & put the money towards a decent timing light. It's something you can always keep & use on any car.

Thanks, I did not take it like that anyway! Yeah I could do with some help really though I've been reading a lot about this while away on my mini 'work' break in Denmark.

Check sparkplugs and test for compression.
I need to pencil mark the timing into the damper. I know how to do this, I've worked it out.
Disconnect the vac hoses and block off
find TDC from piston 1, ensure its right with the pencilmarkings, if not, correct. add with tipex or similar on to the damper.

Then try and get about 12 degrees at idle at 900 rpm ish.
Then try and record what my advance curve is through to 3000 rpm. This should be about 34 degrees. not much more.

It may be the above does not work out, then its dizzy out and look at if it is an advance type or perhaps its a non advance type... check springs and plate for alterations.

With modern fuels I think you may find you need more than 12 Degrees at Idle - the nearer you can get to around 20 degrees the better - it will aid cooling........
