Lower ball joint removal

Post by MilesnMiles »

I have to remove the lower ball joint. On my 73 car it is threaded, but what I think I need is the tool that is available to separate the joint.
Could anyone possibly lend me one. I'll pay post obviously and induce beer in return!
Even better if the tool includes the correct socket top wind out the ball joint from the LCA

Ive got a puller that should do it miles.....It goes between the two sections and then just put a g clamp on the outside to stop it popping off. Screw the threaded bolt in and it should just pop off. Want me to post it down to you mate?? Alternatively, a sharp tap with a hammer on the side of the joint will pop it out but I dont like doing that

are 1971 onwards road runner lower arms different from normal 196? to 1970 ones? i.e web pictures makes them look like everyone elses upper arms?

sounds like you need the TOOL...odd square socket thang

or if its just....JUST getting the taper out

stone masons hammer held very hard one side and hit the thing with the balljoint taper through it into the stone masons hammer with a FBH from the other side. this kinda clangs the taper and breaks its grip

splits the taper usually on the 3rd or 4th go without knacking the seal or musrooming snapping or general breaking of anything but your knuckles or those of the guy holding thye stone masons hammer (big square one)

are you sure they are worn or did you just have a run in with a MOT man who is used to dealing with nylon socketed balljoints.
might just need grease

PS if you do this with the car jacked up

make sure the wheel is touching the floor otherwise the torsion bar will whack it down with considerable force, rendering any part of your anatomy under it pretty damn usless leave the balljoint nut on just not done up

this considerable force can also assit in removing the taper from the bit where its wedged

Wiser words Dave. My mot guy is a hot rodder and always greases my balls, I mean joints  at MOT time. I could see the movement so it has to be done.
If I relax the torsion bar right off I assume I'll be safer?
The LCA on 1973 cars is unique and not interchangable, so are the torsion bars. The ball joint is threaded by the way
