I dial 19-20 degrees into a STOCK 440. My own 440 with bigger cam I had 25 initial and 35 total.

I got the timing light on the car and it is showing 45 degrees initial timing at idle.

Needless to say something is incorrect, the timing light or the timing mark.
Or maybe the Damper is slipping (thigh I can not see it is doing that).

The car went out again yesterday for a 10 mile jaunt. Ran well, 180*F max, it was quite a warm day as well. Pulled like a train, idled well even after a sharp stop from 70mph.

Perhaps someone will be able to spend 30 minutes on it with me at HRD's and show me where I've gone 'wrong'?

It is leaking coolant now though lol. Always something eh.

'Final' update on this thread in case it helps others in the future.

TDC was found again at Hot Rod Drags by the best pit crewe I've ever encountered!
Rocker cover off, inlet and outlet rocker when they can move means its at TDC on compression stroke.
checked the mark on the damper, it was not correct.
wiped off and remarked.
I think the car was running 25-27* advance at idle then nearly 50 at full load at 3krpm.
There was 15 degress of advance in the dizzy so this has now been changed to 17* at idle and 32* advance at full (I think, I'll need to check. I was that excited it was running well I can't remember!)

So the carb was a problem that caused the bogging and total cut out due to over fueling, fuel fountains etc. Floats fixed that issue.

Then the Timing was out and it had too much when at total advance.

Drove home really well, in traffic it was 185*F on the run it was 175-180*F

Very happy with it.

Thanks guys.

Good its all sorted!, would've thought that you could run more than 32 total at your 8.1CR though even on normal unleaded, but no matter.

It was nearer 40 initial and 55 total Jon. We set it at 18 so the total should be a conservative 33. Now you have just the one timing mark ;) you should be able to have a fiddle and see how she performs if you increase gently :thumbright:
Lifes Too Fast But The Car`s Not, It even managed to miss the boat twice.
Now passed customs.
Now on route.
Now in posession.
Now costing me sh*t loads.

Ah thanks for clearing that up John.

Well pleased with how its driving for now, might knock it forward a little but will get it marked up on the dizzy so I can return it in case I go too far!

Cheers

Here's the A Team in action :D

I think John (Blue) is wiring up some C4 to 'sort' the car up in this photo!

Many thanks everyone.
