I think the issue with modern diesels is that they're tuned to be great on fuel til the turbo kicks in, then they suck it down like a hemi. Pootle round at 50mph you'll get good mileage!
BT used to run loads of Connect vans, they've replaced most with Vivaros or Fiat vans nowadays.

I get around 30 mpg plodding in the transit Paul. But remember diesel is more expensive than petrol.

Personally think your crazy mate.

I'd get something that returns at least 35 mpg running diesel and put all the savings over the running of the ram to get the Coronet sorted!

I keep having dirty thoughts about 300c's as a daily but doing 20k miles a year...........I can't justify the fuel economy (even the diesel). If I did I'm robbing money from the project.

Hence I run a focus estate with the 1.8 tdci.........55 mpg over 40k miles thus far and enough room to carry an entire a body k member c/w discs, calipers and dampers in one go!

It gives me the cash to do the car and make most of the events I want in the year.........just a mundane drive.......but it does the job!

Yep, my 2.0 Skoda Octavia which I thrash the tits off daily is terrible on fuel.

48MPG on average over the 5,000 miles I've had it from new.

Shocking milage!

I see your point Dave. However mile for mile the Ram actually worked out cheaper this year. And had the Ram not been about to bail us out when the Transit spat its dummy , days of work lost would have also come into the equation.

Can I just add in the 3 k or so you instantly lost on your new car as you drove it out the show room ?

Personally Gary I think sensibility has to prevail with a daily work vehicle mate, but that's just my opinion. I prefer to bang all my hard earnt into the Mope (when its running) rather than banging it all in a work vehicle that at the end of the day is just a tool, the Mope is the toy.

We had a Diesel Pug 406 2.1 estate huge when you put the seats down and driven sensibly returned 40-50 odd miles to the gallon. Plus you wont have to pay the extra to go across the water.

can't go wrong

2 billion taxi drivers can't be wrong

keep it serviced, let the turbo cool before switching off and use the oil VW reccomend

you'll get 150,000+ trouble free miles

A Skoda or Passat Estate is indeed a terrific workhorse and an excellent all round family car. The earlier up to 2005 1.9TDi 130hp engine is THE best, the later 2.0 motor has some injector probs. I've had my '05 1.9tdi Passat 130hp B5 for over 4 yrs, and apart from tyres I've done nothing....38mpg around town and 50+ on a run, superb low down torque etc. Just gotta watch for the dreaded DMF flywheel syndrome, get a goodun and you'll love it with all your tools in the back....just some added info here.

Monday 29th September.

Dear Diary.
Nice slow plod to work at 6.30 am due to fog. The V8 warning road users all the way !
Carry on with large kitchen after plumber and sparks have done the alterations. Items packaged wrong and some damaged. Replacements due........14th October. FFS !!!
Cancel floor tiler and granite work tops. Clients over the moon at the thought of no cooker , sink etc for another 2 weeks.
4.05 pm leave for parents house in Trasit. Reversing off of drive engine makes horrific noise .........
UFO leaves left underside of van...........
Object identified ....Crank pulley .................

Anothe 300 odd quid to spend on my " sensible " van......
Great mpg though !!

Poke ya Bananarama! boring ,soulless ,oil burning ,euro boxes.

I'm sticking with MOPAR !
