Help with Hi-Fi please.
Hey chaps,
I’ve got a problem with my hi-fi that’s driving me absolutely nuts!
Long story short: Connected the turntable, amp and speakers. Sound came out of speakers at min volume but that was it. Not a single function on the amp would work – volume/bass/treble – nothing! Gave up and left it all alone.
Since then I’ve bought new everything. Garrard Zero S, Yamaha CR1000 and Celestion speakers. Wired everything up and exactly the same problem. Sound comes out of speakers at min volume but none of the functions work on the receiver. As you can imagine I’m pretty dumbfounded.
For the life of me I just can’t suss out what the problem could be. It’s just too much of a coincidence that I’ve got the exactly same problem.
Any ideas chaps?

The Amp has output channel A and B
How are you connected and what mode is the amp set up. eg does you input mode correct.
Sounds like you are taking L from channel A and right from Channel B
or
wrong mode
both will give a half volume you describe
Leak Stero 20 is what you want

The closer you are to death the more alive you are
Then it is probably a power transistor/transistors.... If everything power up OK and you get nothing out of it...... It cold be a final or a driver.... Now they could be more than one. They look like half inch square black plastic flat squares, with 3 metal legs attached to a heatsink. Just looking at them usually does not show if good or bad. But sometimes you can see if they have burned out. They are not usually expensive, but they can be. Not. Rey helpful jem. Get it to a repairer.
turntable plugged into sockets called PHONO in?
you can't plug a turntable into any line level input aux/tuner/cd/tape.
has to be plugged into specific socket for a turntable.
unless you invest in a stand along pre amp. that boosts the phono signal to line level.
if so
does your amp expect to see a magnetic cartridge?
if so it will want to see a Moving magnet cartridge 99% do. if it wants to see a moving coil cartridge you will need to spend 200+ on one most in the 500+ range. you can not replace the stylus in a moving coil cartridge
if you can remove the stylus and it pulls out in a plastic clip with a bit of metal sticking out the back or pokeing out the front of the cartridge you have a moving magnet cartridge.
next
make sure the preamp and control section of the amp is connected to the poweramp/volume control of the amp. this is usually done via switch on the back or 2 jump leads.
pre out left needs to be connected to power amp Left IN and the same for right
if the amp has speakers A and speakers B make sure you have the button pressed to illusrate that you plugged your speaker wires into A or B
red wire speaker A Left to red socket speaker A Left
black wire speaker A Left to Black socket speak A left?
do the same for speaker A Right
switch off tape monitor loop.
switch off Function/Loudness
set bass and trebble to 0/MID point
switch off Beat cut/Limiter
set to stereo
if you have a MAG/XTAL button set it to MAG
set selector to Phono
set volume to 1/4
try it
if you have an amp with blown output transistors
it crackles. you can hear the music quietly but with loud crackles.
does it work on the tape/tuner input direct from any other volume controlled source like your phone Ipod TV tape player etc?
if it does there is nothing wrong with it in that regard and you can discount power transistor death
This sounds like a cabling issue

The Greater Knapweed near the Mugwort by the Buckthorn tree is dying
Here you go Dave. Cartridge is moving magnet. The only way I can get the sound out of the speakers is buy using the pre out but know it should be the phono inputs. I'm lost.Dave999 wrote:turntable plugged into sockets called PHONO in?
