Re -chroming

Remember it isn't the chroming but the polishing that is usually the problem.

If your're reasonably competent and have enough time get the chrome removed then file, sand and buff it up before you just let them rechrome it.

Usually stuff is wrecked on big polishing machines putting waves in bumpers and removing all the detail from pot metal.

I have been around the classic car scene a while and the name Derby Plating has always come up when discussions on chroming comes up. I think they are one of the oldest and most respected.

This is a post on RnS.......get it done while you can!!

Eu planning on banning decorative chrome plating due to branding hexavalent chromium ( the stuff platers use ) a health hazard ( to the people using it ??? ) The ban is due to become law in 2017. The eu proposed substitute is trivalent chromium which isn't resilient and does'nt have the same weather resistance so goes rusty. It is also not as shiny as normal chrome. Trivalent chrome will also react with contamination turning it brown. Decorative chromers use about 10 kg of hexavalent chrome a year whereas hard chromers can use this much in a day but the eu are not banning hexavalent chrome for hard chroming because its used in the aero industry !!! It is said the eu is proposing to ban nickel plating also.
This has come from article have just read in the latest classic bike magazine. It also mentions that the 5% ethanol (E5) in fuel is also to be banned in two years for E10 ( 10% ethanol)

Another chromer company is Castle Chrome they specialize in cars and bikes and advertise i Jaguar Enthusiasts magazine.

I can vouch for Arlesey that Matt mentioned. They did my bumpers, great job and I thought reasonable price. IIRC I believe Morgan had all his stuff done there?

. Not desperate but maybe they might need to employ and extra bod or two. Ashford chroming and the London Chrome company are 1 of the same.

If they are that busy they are probably good, would be wary of anyone that can do it tomorrow .

Avoid Ashford if you want to see your parts again

Yes my thoughts as well, if they are busy enough to quote 6-8 weeks then they must be good, also Christmas coming so that is not going to help.

At least they are being honest and not giving out bull Bananarama! "we can get that done this week" then you never hear from them again !!!

I want to get the Charger front bumper done and the overriders, but am just leaving it a little while to see how the cash flow goes after Christmas.

If you google Castle Chrome there is a post on Piston Heads about if they are still in business from a bit ago....doesn't quite instil confidence.
I've gone with www.chromefix.co.uk . They are part of Broadway Brass who Pete -JL67 recommended and had his challenger bumper done which I have seen.
Guess now I'll get 5 horror stories - Let you know how it turns out.
