Super chips.

Post by Mossy68 »

Anyone had any experience ??
Seen them advertised claiming all sorts of magical stuff. For my 4.0 Jeep.
At present I'm very sceptical , as they can have electrical gremlins which mine isn't showing signs of yet. Obviously would like a few more ponies if I can get them though ! ;)

Okay....send me the money and I'll tell you how to get similar gains!

Take a dump before you drive every Time!
Make sure you remove any unnecessary junk from the boot!
Half fill the tank instead of brimming it!

You'll probably get around 5 horses mate. This will be done by fooling (also known as Bananarama! up) the ECU!
You could get the same by putting on a cold air induction kit on!
At least that would be worth it.....plus it should change the induction sound!

Chipping gains are best found under forced induction not NA!
For a workhorse.......just isn't worth the risk......it may also aid in the discovery of electrical issues other problems!

Is the 4.0 really that slow (always wanted a GC)?

Just my opinion, I'd never chip.....id always get a proper remap!

Cheers Dave.
Really just curious mate. I've had no experience in this modern stuff !

It seems the cold air induction kits are beneficial , but not cheap and as you said I'd rather spend the 209 quid + on the Coronet.

No. The 4.0 isn't slow. It's not a V8 , but it is quite a fun car once you get past the wobbly ride. Kick down is surprisingly good.
It's growing on me. For what I paid its a lot of car.
Early days , but I imagine a later model would make an excellent family car.

I'm trying to help you mate.........don't bother!

Had a look on the super fries site. Only has 4.0 Cherokee from 95-98 at 176 horse.

Says 12hp gain and a big fat 0 torque...........on 2 tonnes on truck you want it the opposite way round. You will spend the cash and feel 0'difference in reality!

You'll get a better gain by changing ALL filters and giving it a good service.

Spent plenty of time around this kinda stuff in my jap days.
Chips and boxes are okay at a price point, but only really worth investing in if you have FI. Here most small engine cars (2.0 4 pots) can see 30 horse and similar torque gains. But for every positive forum thread I read just as many disgruntled posts. They all end up on eBay trying to recoup money...........on top of those (all turbo), Nobody bothers to put them on NA engines......gain is not worth the outlay!

The only way you'd go there is if you put CAI, headers and exhaust plus other engine parts in. By then, to get the best bang for buck you'd want a custom remap on the rollers!

Oh and I'd bet if you read the small print 12 horses is the max gain found on this engine and not a gaurenteed repeat. You may get 10, 8 or maybe less!

You asked......I'll say again SAVE YOUR MONEY!

Cheers Guys.
Steve. I'll take you up on that mate. Bet they ain't as good as the Golden Fish in a Dagenham though !!!

Dave. Appreciate your input. I know you've played with Jap stuff and value your advice.

I've already changed all the filters , along with a coolant flush and change and oil change. 2 new tyres and setting up the NASA controls to suite my flight ! ( far too many gizmos for me !)

Ready to play then. :thumbright:

With modern cars, just remember the factory have pretty much optimised everything already, you might gain a little more top end power for a loss of midrange or general drivability. Unless you've modified anything else, chipping a non turbo vehicle is pretty much a waste of time.

many years ago i worked at a place that dealt with superchips. more often than not they didn't make a blind bit of difference. some would actually lose horsepower but amongst them would be maybe one or two that made a decent difference.

only one i can really remember making a huge difference was a Sierra with the later 2.0 na engine that increased by 20+ horsepower.

personally i wouldn't bother unless real use research suggests otherwise.

same with decats, they don't make a blind bit of difference on power.

keep your money and buy a crd grand cherokee, similar performance, but you will more than half your weekly fuel bill.
My experience with super chips are that they make virtually no difference unless the engine is forced induction

Just leave it....when they are working OK. They are great to drive on our 5th one now.... But it is all apart due to pooched heater core.

They all seem to suffer from the same old problems..... But I like em!
I am keeping this Mopar....... SOLD!
