Another (potentially boring) Powder Coating Question

Post by Anonymous »

Ok,

Is it adviseable to powder coat my brake servo, and power steering pump?

I am asking this thinking of the internal components and damage that might be caused by the heat used during the curing process.

I know all threads etc. need to be masked etc. but witll the diaphragm ./ seals get damaged etc. etc.

Cheers Chaps.

Thanks Steve,

I am getting conflicting sotries. A mate of mine who is into his car resto told me last night I should be ok as the servo is sitting so close to the Ex manifold it sees nearly the same temp as that applied during coating - 200 degrees F I beleive.

Is it possible to get the servo rebuilt / powger coated by anyone? Who might that be, and any idea of costs???

only place i know of is
J&L spares
01706 644210

they do full overhaul or nothing (i wanted them to just get my plymouth one working) their price they quoted me was ?160

Perhaps wait till other people have responded in case they know of somewhere nearer/ better etc

if yours works ok what about dismantling it yourself and getting the metal bits coated ?

Mine is a Bendix Servo which I beleive is a clamp type. I will take a pic and post it. I have seen a number of different types on other peoples car so to try and describe it would be difficult.

Thanks for all the info guys.

Is it worth me going the same route with the PS pump or should I just paint it semi-gloss black???

my opinion is if the part has any seals or gaskets in or on it, don`t powder coat it. Strip the parts down to bare metal only if you must powder coat.

Powder is generally cured at 180-200c, which will be quite harmful to most rubbers.

BTW Clive - if you care about such things I think conventional wisdom is that PS boxes were unpainted - i.e natural cast iron metal. I'll either clear coat mine or paint it cast iron grey.

If however, you just want a nice looking box.....black is good!!

Will

figure on about ?100 + depending on which one it is, this is denoted by what brakes the car has, drums or disc.

One thing here, if the master cylinder and booster are old then they can settle slightly, if you fit just a new booster then this can recentre the master cylinder slightly sometimes causing it to leak.

Again depending on what they are they will all range from ?120 to ?180 with M/C for all Mopars, core charges make a big difference here

Hi Wil defo interested in one if you can get me one. I will email you pics of it as this is Clives thread. There is more than one type to be found on these cars it seems. My blue one had the same type and that car was built in canada, so perhaps thats a clue to the make etc.

Sorry Mr.c its the Power Steering Pump I was talking about not the box. The box is cast iron grey, and thats the way its staying

I will get some pics of my servo on here tomorrow hopefully.
