A Mild 383 Engine Build that makes Power+TQ!
Taken from US site.
383 Block +.030
383 Crank
383 rods, ARP bolts
383 Sump+ w/tray
Stock Melling M63 Oil pump
KB Flat top Pistons with reliefs.
Block decked, 0 deck, 9.1CR
ProComp Ally heads with mild clean up.
You could use 84cc OOTB Eddy Heads to save on offset rocker costs
MRL Custom Hyd, Roller Cam, 227/231 dur@.50, .550" Lift
Roller Rockers
RPM Intake
ProForm 750 DP Holley
FBO ignition (outperforms MSD6 & 7) =
436HP at 5200!!
460+TQ from 3750-4800rpm peaked at 467tq
This is a street friendly drive anywhere engine.[/b]
You could have the heads ported to around the 320cfm mark and make 500hp+

Blimey Les....that sounds so straightforward but this race tuning theory stuff is still a big, scary monster to me. Do these guys come up with these combos through trial and error or do they all use theoretical stuff to work it out? Im guessing on trial and error or else all builds would come to the same conclusion...surely??

Its having the knowledge of how engines work Steve, coupled with race tuning practices, but the main reason of how these numbers are achieved is with meticulous block preparation, making sure you have perfect square bores and the decks are right, Cylinder Head prep etc. etc. Cam selection is a major factor as well which is chosen on Head selection and CR and intended use.
Its ALL about matching the "right" parts that will work together. Its not scary at all really, its pretty basic stuff, you just gotta know what certain parts will do and not do.
Doing it for a living, having a workshop and Dyno certainly helps him come up with combo's such as this after many different customer engines, rebuilds etc., so a certain amount of trial is involved, at the same time he sells these engines and makes a living.

Looking at the parts used , would I be right in thinking this would be a " lower budget " engine to build ?
I personally think 383's are over looked in general performance terms.

Yes Gary, lower budget, the key is the Hyd. Roller Cam/lifters which will cost more than a normal cam but that is where it all comes from, and the Ally heads, but thats nothing special. 383's are overlooked, you just got to think a bit more with them on parts to extract what you want, but in this case, you don't need to rev it.
This the same guy that came up with that 7.1CR 440 that made around 430hp in an earlier post here to which I said was impossible, well, perhaps not!

Les comment about "block prep is the key" is absolutely spot on, it's the building block ('scuse the pun) of a successful short engine and will give just keep making good power with more and more can, head induction etc.
That hyd street roller helps too.

But gathering information none the less.
I built my bike engine from scratch 15 years ago and loved doing it. Lots of research before hand , but chose all my own parts etc.
spent a long time checking everything was spot on during the build , but missed 1 thing.
After it was all back together I turned it over by hand and it locked solid !!!!
Turned out the cams were too tall and hit the rocker cover !

It's all about Smiles per gallon !!!
