New seat covers....sunglasses req'd

Post by RobTwin »

New seat covers for the Polara arrived last week, from Legendary.
Very pleased with the quality, we were worried that the carpeted parts on the covers wouldnt match the new carpet in the car but it looks ok.

Shame to have to replace the vinyl thats there but its mainly the foam that needs replacing (have got new foam too), and we think it will be hard to remove & replace the old vinyl without it splitting somewhere.

Anyone out there had any good experiences with auto upholsterers in the south east?
Got a number for Unique Auto Trimming in Surrey, seen some good work of theirs at shows. Anyone got an alternative worth trying?

Or you could try Keith who works at Burnham Autos. His work is outstanding. See www.burnhamautos.com for contact details. There are a few pics in their News section. (I write it!)

Rob, what Bilko said - do it yourself. I installed my Legendary front seats, and I still have the rear seat to do (delivered a couple of weeks ago). All you need is some hog ring pliers and a bit of patience.

It was a bit of a struggle to massage the creases out, but I'm pleased with the results. One tip is to choose a warm sunny day and lay them out in the sun first to make them pliable. Carolyn's hair dryer came in handy too...

Thanks guys,

Dave, yes we did import them. If we'd had our act together a few weeks, (ok, a couple of months) earlier, we could have brought them back with us from our trip to Florida in October. That would have saved a bunch as you know, but the delivery took about 10 weeks altogether, so presumably were made to order (tho they are in their catalog).

Steve (Bilko)/Adam. Your efforts look good enough to persuade me to have a go, just got to persuade Stu now. Not that we're work-shy, just want it done properly! Even if it goes tits-up we could then go running to a pro to get it done right! Putting them out in the warm sunshine might not be too practical this time of year, might have to borrow Carolyn's hair dryer!

Pete, just checked the Legendary catalog, it only lists '63 onwards, but it does say "All 1946-1962 chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge & Desoto models are available. Even if your year and model is not listed, chances are we have it. Headliners are available for most vehicles from the 1930's to the present. Please contact our sales dept for further info."
And, I remember being told by the guy that sold us the car that he thought/was told that because our car is an early 63 model it had a 62 headlining. So if you cant get a 62 you might find a 63 is the same/similar.

We're looking into getting door panels from SMS but havent managed to sort them yet. Just Dashes do them for 63's too, so you could try them both Pete.

And thanks Paul & Steve (Autoholic), will bear those contacts in mind if we chicken out!
