Ok so went out to have a quick look for timing marks, haven't found it on the pulley/balancer yet. It's all been painted over. It took me about 25 minutes to sand/wirebrush the paint off the plate.

Can someone please advise me. On those I can make out an 'R' which I presume is retard, I presume the notch with the hole is '0' and the other side is advance is that right??

Next how much timing is each notch??

They look about 5 degrees to me. 1 degree is about 1/16" so measure them and you'll know for sure.

Modify an old spark plug with a bolt through it and the then install it in cylinder number one. Slowly turn the engine till piston one stops against you home made stop then mark a line on the pulley in line with the TDC mark on the timing tab then turn the engine the opposite way till the piston stops against your stop again now mark this new position on the damper. Now you have two lines, the middle of the two lines will be TDC or as close as you will get it.

Very good, I presume the gap will be because the modified plug is stopping it just before TDC on each stroke?

I'm off to to doctor now because that dose hasn't properly cleared, I'll update when I get this done.

I think its because there is a point where the piston is neither going up nor down at the top of the stroke. It is a few degrees wide so if you only do it one way, the piston stop will indicate when the piston is at the top of its travel but not the mid point between it going up and back down again. If you turn the crank in both directions, you will find the 2 points where it stops going up and starts going back down. In between these two points is the accurate TDC.... :read2:

I ordered the timing light yesterday. It will take a while to get here but what do you guys recommend for initial timing and total timing and by what point should total timing come in on the 383.

Ok folks timing light arrived today and I'm starting to feel better. Just came out to spend and hour on the car and checked dwell first. The dwell was 7degrees. I presume it's neg at coil and battery positive to measure, never had much cause to use this function before😀.

I presume I adjust the point gap on reluctor below top rotor arm to adjust the dwell?? Anyone know the correct gap for 383. Google says 30deg dwell is that correct

Measure with the positive and one side of coil is showing 44,

Can't get the 0.015 feeler gauge in the gap on points.

That gap should be 8 thou. You don't use a dwell meter with electronic ignition.

Cool thanks for that, everyday is a school day. I'll check it tomorrow make sure it's correct.

I checked the timing there is a mark that has been marked with tip x. Timed it to 18deg advance at idle.

Was going to check the piston TDC to make sure mark is correct but the fan cowl is too close to the crank, I can bearly get my fingers in, what's the correct size socket 1 1/2"?
