69 charger 8 1/4 axle

Post by n04hs »

Hi

Is a 8 1/4 axle any good or should i change it for a 8 3/4?

Also is it true a 8 1/4 will only spin one wheel up!

Thanks

Well they are known as an Eight and a Slaughter so that give you a clue.

OK in a low /medium powered car but gets worse as the car gets heavier and the tyres get bigger ans stickier.......

I think you can get LSD (SureGrip in Chryslers) units for 8 1/4's but if you are going to make an investment it is probably better to get an 8 3/4; which are good (but not unbreakable - you need a Dana 60 for that!!!).

Don Scott ("Don" on here) had a very good 8 3/4 "B" body width axle for sale some time back - check out the For sale - Parts section............

The 8 1/4" is a pretty strong axle, depends on what your plans are for the car. All the mopar axles can be open or LSD, you need to check. Jack the back up and turn one wheel by hand, if the other wheel is turning in the same direction it's an LSD, if it turns in the oppasite direction it's an open diff.

I have 8 3/4 - mine only spins up one wheel - no LSD. Its the diff inside that matters for that, a suregrip or similar. Ref type of axle - depends what you want to do with it - its about strength. If you are going to run 500HP then chances are you want to change it. If you dont, dont worry about it.
