ignition switch replacement

Post by chris0691 »

My ignition switch has died so have come to replace it and I'm having a bit of trouble. Would I be right in that you need to remove the steering wheel to remove the column cover? And this may sound incredibly stupid but is there something I'm missing in trying to remove the wheel? Took the horn cover off and removed the centre nut but it's not shifting. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

That's a quick way to bugger the column. Puller only.

3/8 long extention and a good tap

Also I have seen it done with somone arcing a car battery across the wheel and shalf but if I mention that Dave will have kittens

Hitting the centre of the column will break the plastic rivets holding the collapsable inner in place, and/or displace the top bearing circlip don't do it! You need a puller and it's a doddle.

Went a picked up a puller today. And most definitely a doddle. 30 second job. Hopefully get the switch swapped in the next week or so depending on work. Cheers all

Watch this it will tell you everything you need to know about the steering column.

cheers Mick.

Been a bit since I've been able to do anything because of working daft hours. The top section of the column needs to come off to access the swtich, but the bearing seems to be stuck on the shaft. Planning to try another puller on it. Just wondering if anyone has a similar issue?
Cheers

Have you took the circlip off in front of the bearing ? I made a puller to draw the casing off but you could put a screwdriver either side of the casing and gently prize it off but be very careful or you may collapse the column.

Yeah circlip is off. There's a little rust on the shaft. So wondering if there's some round the bearing sits. Have sprayed with some wd to see if will loosen and lightly gone over the shaft with some sandpaper.
