transmission sizes

How much difference in size is there between a manual and an auto transmission? My street rod is very narrow and the 727 gearbox on the back of the 383 just looks massive, is the manual box any narrower and indeed shorter than the auto? Reason for asking is years ago I put a rover 3500 in a capri and the differences in bellhousings was massive, in that instance the manual bellhousing is far bigger than the auto setup.

I believe a manual is the same length as an auto. The prop shafts are the same length so I guess they must be.

They're very similar really, the only big difference is the shifter mech sticking out of the side!

Cheers for the replies. I was hoping that the manual would have been a bit smaller as I am really tight on space but if not tgen an auto it will stay as one less pedal to accommodate.
