Auto box question

While my engine and box are out, is it worth me changing any seals in the box while its on the floor? are they prone to leaking?? it hasn't been used for a couple of years but doesn't look wet anywhere.. thanks in advance

I'm not an auto box expert at all, Dave Bishop rebuilt my 904.
It is worth changing the filter which you have to drop the bottom pan, but that is not difficult with it in the car.
It depends what you are doing overall, i.e. full resto or just getting the car on the road.
I tend to work on the "If it aint broke, dont fix it" method to save a few quid and also if it works fine and doesnt leak, why fiddle with it and risk it leaking or not working.

There are some much more experienced minds on here who may have a more informed opinion but that is just mine.

I definitely go for if it ain't broke don't fix it!

Just wondering if they start to leak after not being used etc.

Tailshaft seal is worth doing.

Also the front pump seal/input shaft. Rear can be done anytime,front is box out again.

If it's been laid up a while the cork sump gasket will have hardened so that's worth doing too. Remember to check the gasket surface on the pan is flat, some careful hammering will sort it

Don't be tempted to put any gasket sealant on anywhere as it can break off and get into the gearbox

How do you seal em Dave?, I heard that wellseal was the dogs.

My pan leaks and I wanted to sort it and change the filter whilst at it but have never done it for the fear of making it worse.

I never used any sealant on pan gaskets. I always took time to knock out any dimpled bolt holes and helicoil any bad threads. With that done and using the correct captive washer bolts torqued up to the correct spec. No leaks.

I don't think it's intended for the 727 strictly speaking but it seems to have fixed a persistent leak on my car. I ordered it from my local Dodge dealer.

To answer the original question, pump seal, new filter and gasket, seal on the valve body to case and a new dipstick O ring. Those are the normal things that leak.

) on mine over winter. Remind me where the place is that you trans guru's get your seals from ?
