As said the Convertor is a must; THEN you have got to decide HOW racey you want to make it. You need to set a goal, and this must have a realistic Budget.
If you want to see strip action then the correct Gears and Tyre combination are probably next (but this impacts on convertor choice as well....) and probably next is Subframe connectors to stiffen the chassis up....clearly you will also have to check that the Propshaft is up to the task.......
A cheap (like HP) fix on a low compression motor would be Nitrous, so at least it would remain driveable on the street.....
...and finally (or even first as Blue would say) get as much weight out of the car as possible without ruining it.....free horsepower.....................easy!!!!
Hi guys, sorry for the delayed reply...... I appear to have fallen asleep at the computer sometime after 9.41pm coz I woke up at 12.35am still sat there !! I blame it on all the fresh air at the weekend, it can't be anything else.
John, by rear end work I meant getting getting rid of the air shocks but keeping the lift to stop the arches rubbing the tyres. Maybe an extra leaf in the springs.
Thanks everybody for the info on the holley thats the first job to be done then the Converter.
Some good info there Pete thankyou gotta give this a lot of thought especially as I have told the missus we can't afford a big holiday this year and now she is saying "well you can find money for your car blah blah" They just don't understand.
Too right Pete....the female of the species can be a totally illogical force to be reckoned with at times. I'm sure they're all wired up Positive Earth (except any ladies on here that might read this of course).....
Well as long as you can decide and articulate what you want to achieve with the car, there is a LOT of help, experience, and advice that will get you there as cheaply as possible.
...Then again "Cheap" is a relative term, compared to roundy-roundy racing it is cheap (ask Andy Robinson!!), compared to knitting it's a bit pricey..........

Hi John, Looked at it earler and watching it. Don't think its a DP though is it ? (Novice here) No choke mechanism though and my car can be difficult to start from cold although the Holley might overcome this ?
As I will be getting the Converter replaced as soon as poss
(2500 stall ??), Pete has suggested a 750 DP ? I would sooner spend a bit extra to get what it needs but I am totally in the hands of you guys.
Either is fine Ian and yes it`s a vac sec not a double pumper.
I have a vac sec on mine at the mo, swapped it out in place of my double pumper in fact and it drives nice.
There will always be the vac sec v double pumper debate but my experiance is as long as its in good nic the tuning of it is the most important between the 2 of them.

As JohnS (and I said ) a Vac Sec will be fine initially for you.
I have just missed out on another Carb on FleaBay so it may bid up quite a bit at the end of the auction. I would estimate that £50 - £75 is a realistic price, maybe a bit more....BUT the rebuild kit will be another £50 'ish.........
The listing on the one I attached states it`s been fully re built
I would guess it goes over £75

I'm in and out of the garage with no phone signal so staying logged on with computer in the house....sorry if replies are slow.
Yes John I noticed that too but it said rebuilt with an Edelbrock kit should I be worried ??!!??
I dont think so but you would have to ask the seller.
Just remember that buying anything second hand is a bit of a gamble but thats why you dont pay the new price
