New mini starter and fitment

Well I got the new mini starter after less than 24 hrs which was brilliant service.
Took me a bastad time to fit it which I'll come to, but when I fired it up. :shock: wow what a difference, should have done it years ago. Turns over like a new car and fired in a second. Most pleased.

Now the query. Due to the stock manifolds I cannot see the wiring attachment and fitted it blind which tok an age. I removed the black wiring extension piece as it looked too close to the block. Is this correct?
The stock starter has a ceramic block to prevent shorts. I didn't check the new mini and I'm slightly concerned about accidentally earthing one of the leads.
I can't see the wires from any angle, anyone know if these starter do have some ceramic protection?

Absolute bargain given what I was putting with from the stock one. It's really small and spins like a dervish in comparison.

Do we think this would fit my 383? My starters always been rubbish

You normally leave the extension on with a small block and remove it for a big block. I usually jiggle the starter roughly into position and then bolt on the cables first before I bolt it in place.

Thanks Blue, it was pretty much a trial fit as the starter has to come out again for header fitment.
Wiring up and then fitting seems a good option.

Craig, yes should fit big block. I believe small and big block the same.

BB & SB are the same.

I got so fed up struggling with the Starter Motor wires and concerns about shorting out that nowadays I put a HD Connector on the Chassis leg near the firewall under the Master Cylinder.

I can just bolt the starter Motor in with the tails on and then connect them up to the Connector at my leisure. Simples. :read2:

I just fitted mine a few days ago and I used a durite rubber boot, you cut the tips off and then slide the cable through, works a treat and gives peace of mind.

Some good ideas for safety here chaps, cheers. I'll take a longer look at it tomorrow.

I don't remember having too much problem with wiring my starter.

I had to put new cables in and reroute them, as my cable was cooked next to headers.

Hard work from under.

Like the idea of connector :thumbright:

got one in mine 8-) :) :thumbright:

as said; I removed the extension piece, big block

connected and tightened the starter cables

fitted the plastic insulator cap

then bolted the starter into place

the plastic insulator is positioned in the recess of a core plug

once the starter is in you can’t get the insulator on or off

hence a great idea to connect it all up before installing

Damn, that is a tight fit, in the core plug recess!
It certainly transformed the starting. Frankly I was shocked, it turned over faster than my daily driver :lol:
However, definitely revisiting the connector before I drive it.

probably reads worse than it is
