Drum Brake sizes

Post by Coupe66 »

Hi All,

I have bought a 68 Charger and at the moment it's in the states and
would like to get a few bits and pieces for it while it's over there.

I am looking to give the brakes a good overhall when it arrives and prior to the MOT. All I know is that has drum brakes all round. My questions are what size are the drums (11")! and what sizes (width) are the front and rear shoes also what is the piston size for the wheel cylinders as I've been on the RockAuto site and there are different sizes listed.

They could be 10", 11", or if you are lucky 12" Drums. Given that it is an old car unless you are really clear on the history of the car you don't know what people have done to it within its lifespan............

I had a 383 Coronet with 10" drums.....The HD Brakes were usually the 12" Drums....still not the greatest thing in the world and most people opt for Disc Brake Front Conversion.

Mopars tend if anything to be over-braked on the rear so those will be fine...

You will be better off waiting until you have the car, depending on the original specifications you could have a couple of different sizes, also factor in 47 years of use & things could have changed.
You can't have too much power, only a lack of traction!

if you plan to do a disk conversion at any time

get the narrowest rear cylinders possible

suggest mid 90s dodge dakota (same part used on some UK chrysler and Jeep)

helps avoid rear wheel lockup

I would definitely wait until you have the car and can measure and check. There are so many variables, dont rely on what a parts list says is standard as things get changed alot. I found brake parts easy to get over here, I got discs, drums, shoes and wheel cylinders off the shelf, and most of the suppliers overe here get weekly or fortnightly shipments if they havent got stock.

Thanks' all for your help,

I'll take you're advice and wait for it to arrive and have a look and see what is actually fitted size wise and maybe consider a disk conversion on the front end as an when funds allow.
