I know its prob been asked a thousand times before on here, but
Whats the best timing settings for 383.
Had my carb sorted and while setting the float level, with HT lead off noticed coil is sparking across the top(think it has a crack in top)
So im replacing the coil and going to re set the timing

34 degrees full advance; and as much advance at idle that distributor can deliver that the car can handle without the starter motor kicking back, or worst case the Convertor dragging the motor down.
If you get around 17 degrees at idle on a stock Dizzy then you are doing pretty well.

For what its worth (stock440) I've just been through LOADS of trials with mine (loads of different curves and spring rates). Best one so far has been stock advance (which for my MSD is 21deg) with initial set to 16. (So total advance ~37).
Doesnt pink, pulls hard.
What I have learned ? Dont Bananarama! around with distributors. Stock knows best

Apologies; for clarity I meant 'stock curve' worked best for my application, not stock advance. My key point was 'I made it worse by playing with the curvesPete wrote:"Stock" in the manual is 0 degrees - i.e. TDC at idle which is rubbish on modern fuels...........

Cheers for the input guys. I have someone who knows what he is doing with v8s coming to set it up for me when the new coil arrives. Just wanted to know a rough idea of timing to tell him.
My dizzy is electronic points FBO set up. Was recurved to suit my motor, but I have never had the engine run right, could be due to the broke coil though.
