some engine progress

Regarding dipsticks, I would measure and pour in the amount of oil I want in the engine, give it an hour to settle and then alter or mark the dipstick accordingly. That way you know it's correct. I always use higher capacity pan but add about 2 quarts less than it will take to keep the oil away from the crank. Doing that means the dipstick tube has to be cut down for the stick to read the new oil level correctly.
“It’s good enough for Nancy”
I will measure in future
the whole annoying thing on top of the time and effort is that I've missed something and so far have learnt nothing cos I can't see what is probably right in front of me.
one more attempt to go then its "call in the A team".

The Greater Knapweed near the Mugwort by the Buckthorn tree is dying
well grabbed a few hours at the weekend
started it up to check timing after rolling road
discovered 0* TDC initial timing
and 32 all in a 3000 which explains the initial
that's a relief, and goes some way to explain the results. a bit more ooomphfff in there yet to be extracted
obviously need to address dissy curve.
drained it
took off all the bits
drain box tonight and pull it out

OK good news I think
six months of fannying about and its back in
engine came out
Engine stripped
honed
new rings
last lot were sealed power
this lot perfect Circle/Mahle
all rings checked in bore
Perfect circle instructions suggest a second ring with an inner chamfer goes the opposite way to the way sealed power say it should be installed. so that's how it was done.
while out I took the trans tail shaft housing off and replaced the seal and Bushing (same as 727)
I also made up new ignition leads
got new dizzy cap
replaced connectors
built new HEI setup
cleaned up and rebuilt Dizzy had the advance curve adjusted for modern fuel and my cam and CR by a hemi expert in Oz (just sent him the shaft and weights he re-polished it and re-curved the advance worth the £80 + post. dare say it could have been done here but...hey
also invested in a dodge truck clutch actuator/adjuster. solid ball swivel. no rubber no washer, easier to set 30 thou release bearing clearance
anyway back in
filled with Millers
filled box with Penrite 20w50 for manual gearboxes in old cars
K-seal and 20% antifreeze (not taking any gasket risks this time) I know people often refer to this stuff as snake oil that clogs up radiators...but in a for a penny. i'll dump it in a week or two and put in proper
get the car together
turn the key
bang scrape whizzz
pull starter motor
reduction gear head casting smashed...looks like the pinion shield had not seated into the machined section in the bell properly and obviously I had tightened it up (impossible to see whats what with headers )
took it out and it looked good then the lugs fell off it and I notice the pinion stopper in the housing at the end of the shaft was mangled
luckily the shed had 2 starters in it, 1 for my flywheel and one for a BorgWarner 35
toyed with swapping the heads across but glad I didn't
new starter is excellent, like its on steroids
car started
No smoke
sounds crisp and eager... yes for once it sounds proper
ran it up to temp
set initial at 10 BTDC
checked for leaks
it got dark so went in and had a well deserved cup o tea
not being too pleased just yet
has to be road tested on way to MOT
I'll book that for Saturday afternoon
That will give me a chance to check it all out and put the bonnet back on
i'll get it MOTed than pull it back into the garage to put the new rear axle in

Cheers fellas
man its been a pain
all the new things that could go wrong...no problem
all the stuff I have done before that I shouldn't have issues with.....problem
Its a lesson in taking your time and if your heart isn't in it...leave it and don't try to rush.
the mistakes are made when your really can't be bothered or are really rushing to get it done.
we'll see how it goes
