backfire

Post by Chris&Adam »

Hi guys, Just fitted 2 Flowmaster boxes to the roadrunner and I am now getting a backfire on the l/h side of the car. This happens on deceleration but not all the time. Ran ok before the Flowmasters. Your help would be greatly appreciated....Thanks in advance..............Chris.

When you say not all the time, is it at any particular time? Like when running from cold or when hot? Is the bang coming from the rear, middile, front of the car?

Sometimes the noise sounds like its under your but?

Bit more info Strike :)

Sounds like there's a small leak that draws in enough air to mix with any unburnt fuel when you decelerate :)

Thanks for the replies, Clivey and Latil. Backfire is when motor is hot and seems to be under my butt!!! (definitely not the result of the baked beans and curry from last night). Will check to see if any air leaks. Thanks.....Chris.

First things first, get under the old bugger and check for holes in the exhaust, then check for leaks round the clamps. I reckon she is puffing though a hole somewhere.

Mine does it on open headers when i snap the throttle shut at the top of the 1/4. Never knew (or cared) why though. My guess is unburnt fuel in the pipes though.

As you said mate, the car drove fine before you put the flow masters on, and seeing as you aint doing 1/4's in it when the problem occurs and you aint running open headers, just check for leaks in the exhaust first. Its more than likely related to the most recent intervention seeing as it was ok before hand.

Lets just keep it simple till the simple things have been ruled out. :)
