Ignition wiring

Post by Lance »

Can anybody tell me what the wire gauge is for the live (red) to the ignition barrel please, as mine could do with replacing. All the electrics are standard as far as I can tell.

The ammeter bible suggests 10 gauge... (assuming ammeter bypass)

Read this for details -

Match the main current carrier - go big.

From barrel to bulkhead, at some time somebody has cut the insulation and then taped it over??
If its as simple as just measuring it then that's fine thanks, I thought the wire was rated on number of strands and amperage and all that stuff, not having much knowledge of auto wiring requirements perhaps I'm being over cautious.
Thankyou both for the advice.

No worries - but while you are at it, if it has one, perform the ammeter bypass as detailed in the article. (assuming applicable to your car - I dont know if it is). Standard config on lots is to run the whole ignition circuit through the bulkhead and the ammeter. Evidently this was something of a lash up when new, and 50 years down the line its downright dangerous. Fire-tastic !
