exhaust pipes

Post by Chris&Adam »

Ok guys, does anyone know the MOT ruling on where exhaust pipes should exit ? Do they have to clear the car body? Does the age of the car affect this? ( different rules for different years). Thanks in advance for any help you can give...................Chris.

From memory there's nothing to say that you even have to have a silencer box in the system, let alone where the pipes should end. So long as the system effectively reduces the noise.
Go to a library and have a look at the current testers manual. I've had pipes coming out all over the place and never had test trouble yet, most would fail Construction & Use regs though, not a prob unless you're sva testing :D

The exhaust system is supposed to be long enough to terminate beyond the passenger compartment and exit at the rear or side of the vehicle, and noise is supposed to be not more than 90db at so many feet, I can't remember exactly. MOT stations don't normally have the means of testing the noise so that's down to the testers opinion. By the book even a quiet system that ends at the axle and underneath the car should be a fail but many, testers will pass it.

had n problem with these where they are, only use tiny moroso race mufflets (3") which dont make a whole lot of difference to noise ! the mot guy did mention something about the noise levels, but i couldnt hear him, not much they can do about it anyways,

we did have a thread on this subject a long time back, i'll see if i can find it, but i think as long as the exhaaust is whole and not leaking, they cant do much about it.

here's the link http://www.mopartalk.co.uk/mopartalk/vi ... e+mufflers
