Steves 72 New Yorker

Post by Steve »

Thought it was about time I started a thread on my New Yorker. She has been sitting on the driveway looking very sad with a broken windscreen since I imported her a couple of months ago but that's now fixed and Ive actually started to formulate a plan for getting her back into shape.

Im going to keep her original where possible and just want her to be a nice driver/ cruiser when Im done.

Ive given her the once over, checked all the fluids etc and have put her up on axle stands so I can work underneath etc. She runs ok now and I have run her up and down through the gears etc while off the ground and everything seems fine.

I have prioritised the jobs as follows;

1. BODYWORK......dent on passenger wing top, small repair to drivers side floorpan, repairs to both roof to C pillar joints, couple of very small rust patches on the rear quarters. Bare metal the roof and prime/ paint to seal it.

2. UNDERSIDE....all rock solid with light surface rust as dry state car. Tank out, new fuel lines etc, underseal as I want her to be an all weather driver.

3. ENGINE BAY.....steam clean, check and tidy all wiring. Clean bulkhead connector, remove non functioning aircon (less cluttered look). Check all the usual stuff (plugs, leads, carb settings, timing and general service stuff). Fit new washer bottle and hoses.

4. BRAKES......general service, good clean, adjust rears, bleed etc

5. LIGHTING.....covert to UK spec dipped beam units, move side lights out of indicators into headlamps, rear orange indicators.

6. INTERIOR.....new carpet, fit radio (found one in North Carolina. Just needs a clean) General clean, repairs to front seats. New mirror (thanks Dunc)

This is my general plan as a starting point. As I progress, Im sure I will find other stuff to do so watch this space

Cheers Steve

Thanks Pete....I doubt it to be honest, not enough doors for me!! :thumbright:

Im still at the bottom of the learning curve so hoping to consolidate some of the skills I touched on with the Fury and build on them. See how she goes but my heart is with the old Polara to be honest.

Im hoping to get this car to a reasonable state by the Spring and will decide what to do then. I would love a Hurst car like the one Dunc had but Im not there yet so will just plug away at this resto until funds will allow more in the future.

cheers Steve :thumbright:

Plenty of Autosol going to be used on that front end!! ;) :thumbright:

Thanks for the positive words men...Hi Mick....I have a normal sized garage attached to my house which is jammed full of tools and beer etc. Even if it was empty I would have no chance working on a car in it unfortunately. I rent a garage to store my Polara but that isnt suitable to work in as the tenancy agreement is just for storage. At least I get a suntan when I work on her (or frostbite  )

Aiming to get the roof solid, smooth, primed and painted before the cold weather Terry, then white vinyl when funds permit (probably last thing to do as its just cosmetic).

Yeah Dave...that bumper is one big pressing to say the least!!

Thanks Ali...the screen was a pain but in now so I can move on with it.

Yeah Drew, triple white 2 doors are quite rare cars. Hope to have some fun in her when shes done.

Thanks Stuart.....fancy a C body swap???

Thanks Dave...will keep pics coming as I work on her.

Thanks Gaz....sorry shes only got 2 doors matey, at least my no1 car is a proper 4 door sedan!!
