yes steve ,I know many things sometimes ,but not often,im guesing he has the small block ones ,if he had fenderwells the starter would just drop out ,so in quessing the steering goes throught the primary tubes ,with the steering off and the header loose and a bit of wiggling and swearing the starter will drop out ,,,,,and when its out and in the bin ,replace it with a mini starter

I ended up putting a support across the car

undo the starter

suspend it in its Area from the support

then take off the headers, and on mine the carb nearest (I have 3)

then cos its an I6 I take it out upwards

to get it back in it needed to be suspended until the headers were in more or less the right place

then string them up on the support and put the starter in

and mines a 6 you can stand next to it in the engine bay

I had to concave the end of one of the header studs so I could press a straight length of coat hanger onto the end in order to deliver the washer and nut to the stud, brand new nut and stud and I could fiddle them on and do em up with a C spanner wedged in the end of a bit of cupboard hanging rail . All to get passed 2 of the header pipes that are curved around the starter and heater motor

some out of the box, or indeed out of your box thinking will eventually result in either mental illness or a solution.... somebody put them on originally.

When I replaced my starter last year had the same problem.

Hooker headers too, starter drop off and sat on the header/exhaust but would not come out.

Unbolted the headers, loosen the exhaust pipe all the way, so I could move it out the way enough to get the starter out.

Man it was not an easy change.

My TTI headers required a mini starter. Good job too, much lighter and fires the motor up like. A modern car.

Hi Guys
Just a note to say the old starter motor is out and new in
I've found its a lot easier when there's 2 of you trying to resolve the problem
Had to undo engine mounting bolts and lift the motor as far as possibles do pull over to release header
It was still a tight squeeze getting the old out but it's done just finishing of final bits and ready for start up
