318 help and advice needed please
Hi there,
I have just bought a Dodge d100 pickup with a 1985 318 engine in it.
The engine doesn't have any leaks and no dodgy noises.
The inlet manifold/carb has all the emission stuff disconnected.
The choke on the carb doesn't work.
I am going to put an electronic ignition on it.
I was wondering if any of you guys can give some advice on the carb/manifold set up?
I am a bit of a novice with these engines... although I have built my 361 on my 59 Firesweep.
Any help appreciated.
Regards.
Mick.

Firstly, welcome!
There are a lot of people with great experience on small blocks, whereas I have limited knowledge. I am sure they will be along soon!
In terms of inlet, there are plenty of choices; I would guess a good after market 4bbl dual plane inlet would be best for your application.
I would not worry about the choke not working, these vehicles don't really need it!
Please post up more pictures!!! - also the Firesweep!!

I'd put that fuel filter down on the chassis rail before the pump where things are cooler and before it leaks fuel all over a hot engine.

Do yourself a favour and dump the plastic filter too. Replace with a decent metal version from a fire safety point of view!

My recent post on hear about bodges will tell you why I'm not a fan of the plastic filter timebombs!

Filter
Hi guys,
Advice taken and filter moved and replaced with a metal one.
The carb is a Carter and as I mentioned before the choke is dodgy.
From cold, unless I reconnect the choke it won't start.
It looks like the choke rod is too long because the choke won't fully open once the engine gets hot. If I disconnect the rod...it opens fully.
My question is... Do I have the wrong choke rod or is the carb base gasket the wrong one, should it be thicker?

Re: Filter
When you disconnect the choke you need to make sure the butterfly is locked open. From cold pump the throttle 2 or three times and it should crank and start. From here you may need to fettle the throttle for 30 seconds or so for it to not stall out.Mickglos wrote:Hi guys,

Also noticed on your carb..........Add yourself a secondary return spring on the throttle.
If you've ever had the throttle jam open due to spring failure it can be 'interesting' and can lead to all kinds of 'oh Bananarama!' type running around.......
