Advice or info please

Post by Jagjohn1 »

Hi All
I am trying to find some parts for my 72 Charger SE
I have been told to try DB MOTORS of Lutterworth nr Leicester and wondered if any of you boys have dealt with them as I am having problems . I have been in touch with Martin the boss man who tells me he has a 73 that he is breaking but is too busy with selling new stuff at the mo. I have been told by a contact it might be worth talking to his daughter, Has anyone had the same problem or knows how to get in touch her or should I just sit back counting sheep untill Martin sorts it. Any ideas guys ?
Cheers and thanks
John

I have dealt with DB motors before

Martin is a........character

hard to get on with, initially sullen, obstinate, some would say downright rude, i believe he's not a well man

but ultimately he warms to you and is reasonably sound

dug out all his old racing pictures regaled us with stories of driving super saloons etc the race gear that went through the place would make a tidy fortune these days

we had a good laugh and so did he, cups o tea in thr sun and all that jazz, sat himself down and watched us struggle to get bits of aussie valiant out of the brambles

he has masses and masses and masses of stuff.

took me 3 months to get in

when we did we got all we wanted and more.... I purchased some New old stock and the sale of it more or less paid for my day out

he's totally paranoid about people nicking stuff
he has some rabid dogs that will eat you

I have heard he will quote a reasonable price but he has been known to smash or throw the thing you want if you take the mick on the haggling.

his duty at the mo. is to clear the site for his daughter before he can no longer work or retires

she wants the house and she wants the gounds set back to acres of garden

the yard has been run as an American and Australian car sales business since the 50s, first by his dad then by him.

they would purchase a package of cars from Warwick Wright or AMC or ford complete with a package of spares to cover off the first few years of servicing and sell the car and servicing as a package. thus making sure that the customer always returned and they got first pick on trade in

they operated the yard and a sales lot somewhere else

needless to say the house is stuffed with STUFF

get to know him, be persistent i.e phone every couple of weeks

and you will get in

can't promis the car he says he has is there. we went to see some cars and he hadn't been over that part of the yard in years and to be honest once we had scythed back the brambles and weeds to get through we could see they had dissolved into a pile of mechanical parts

mechanical bits fine but body was gone

place is ex military the buildings are big
and you won't get in to them. one shed of wheels another shed of doors
one of screens
body panels
engines

etc he goes in there to get you stuff. you don't get in but you a free to roam the yard once he's happy you are not there to rob him

get him on a good day and he's a good bloke get him at a low point and he's erm..........LOW

I left the place quite liking the fella

we got

Engine hemi 6
Trans
NOS indicator lenses
NOS door handles
4 hubs
4 calipers
2 disk spidles
themo fans
power steering hoses and pump
boster hoses
washer bottle
interior arm rests
heater controls
box full of other misc interior trinkets (i.e correct nuts bolts screw bezels universal switches ash trays bist of seat belt mounting glove box locks fuse boxes etc

think I paid 200 -300 with the engine being 150 (60p per cubic inch for a 45Kmiles motor and trans) and steve VGVIP paid 100-150 or something like that

I had engine and trans

good day out digging in the grime and rust

That is a very good summary of Mr Dilkes Dave, I used to buy lots of stuff from him back in the '80s, once he accepts you it's easy!
You can't have too much power, only a lack of traction!

Hi All many thanks for your info and time, This is exactly what I thought, I need to tread carefully here, I know exactly how he feels about people taking the Bananarama!. I ran a Jaguar breaking business in the 80's-90's and have had many hundreds of them go through my hands and ended up with tons and tons of stock. I remember a man coming from London to kent to buy a headlight for an xj40, £240 new then,, and hard to get hold of second hand, he kept trying to haggle on my price so I smahed it on the ground and told him to try Halfords ! He went back to London empty handed and I went to the pub a happy man F..k him. I will try to get to know Martin and assure him I will not take the Bananarama! and am happy to pay propper money for his hard to find parts. I just need to be more patient I guess
Thanks for your help guys

That place sounds really interesting men! Maybe a good source of parts for the club if someone gets in the door for us?? Potentially a lot of business for his company in the long run :thumbright:
