Colunm problem

Post by CRAIG »

Hi, now I've got my car on the road again I want to try and sort my steering problem. I've looked at diagrams and im sure I have all the parts in the correct position. When the upper column is all assembled you can pull the steering wheel, shaft and top covers up about 1cm towards you and then pushes back down.

Should the shaft move in and out at all?

No.
It sounds like one or both of the circlips are missing or displaced.

I thought that but there both there and seem to be staying in the groves. I have taken it apart and reassembled a few times, clips seem to be staying in place. The only issue I can see is the the groves are wider than the clips I have. Is this normal?

The housing moves around a bit to, I would of thought this would be solid when in place. It just pushes on, should it fix somehow?

there is a bearing/retainer at the top which has a circlip associated with it and a groove in the shaft to fit in

well on an aussie charger there is. 10 years since I solved the same problem on mine and I can't remember the order.

however your shaft can be too low or too high for you top get the retainer in the right place to actually retain.

I solved it by luck rather then judgement just so happened that on one occasion the planets aligned and circlip ended up in groove because grove was then visible not hidden

I had to take off the bean can and everything including the indicator switch to get to the problem

that would do it

the whole lot at the top is sandwiched between that and 19-14-4 SNAP ring and plate 19-14-23

the snap ring can come out of the grove in the shaft and the shaft can go down. but with 19-46-55 upside down I guess none of it lined up properly

:D Fitted new circlips either side of bearing today with the bottom collar in the correct way round.
Tightened steering wheel on and took it for a spin.
Much nicer to drive, the column hardly moves at all now, not like before when you though it was all going to fall apart.
Right On to next problem :x :)
