I have always been against social media junk because it has taken over my kids life and Ive seen lots of people having 'issues' on it resulting in divorce etc.
I recently found a guy in North Carolina who has lots of parts for sale etc. Ive had a few bits off him but he never checks his email so hes a nightmare to get in touch with. He told me he has a facebook account and does everything on it and says Im missing a lot of good car chat etc by not being on it.
Can anyone explain the best way to go on Facebook without having lots of personal details etc on there please. Ive heard some horror stories but feel like I should consider embracing it a bit more. Im not interested in tracking down people I went to school with etc, just stuff linked to my hobbies etc
Get a teenager to set it up for you and make your profile hidden etc, get them to show you how to search, join groups send messages etc I've been on FB for ages and it's fine. Yes you get sponsored ads and you see some dribble etc but as long as you are savvy it's ok.
You can set the settings so only "friends" see your details. others would just see name, profile photo and any basic info you put like where you live etc. you don't have to put much info on there.
Steve, I tend to only use bookface for car related stuff if I can help it too. Beyond the car stuff there are a few local groups that are useful for picking up bits and pieces; much the same as gumtree and eBay. I picked up a cheap little trailer over the summer for tip runs and a decent cylinder mower, for example? We even bought a Morris Minor advertised on there a couple of years back now I think about it...
I try not to read too much of what other folk write on their "wall" as the amount of personal stuff some people scribe on there beggars belief. I think some folk treat it like their diary? Some of what is written is so deeply personal that it makes you feel quite uncomfortable reading it. Yet, certain individuals are quite happy to put all this stuff out there in the ether???
Some folk even post pictures of their dinner? I really don't understand that one!
On the flip side you get to see some really impressive things... one pal of mine, a retired RAF pilot is into making incredibly detailed fine scale model aircraft. Occasionally I get to see work in progress photos and the finished product... The detail is astounding - not something I'm capable of doing or have a particular interest in getting involved with but I can appreciate the skill and the patience that goes into these little models. It's certainly garnered even more respect for her than I already had.
Another pal from school makes realistic looking carved wedding / birthday cakes. Some of those are quite impressive. I wouldn't have known about either of these things but for bookface.
I guess as with anything, you get out what you put in, eh? Occasionally you read in the news about an uproar re personal details getting out into the public domain and whilst I can empathise with people who feel let down, by the same token I don't care how good company X claims their security is. I passionately believe that if you don't want something permanently on the internet you just don't put it up? I guess you just have to “use ya loaf about it” as my Grandad used to tell me!
Steve, the issue with FB is once on there you want to see what is going on and with car related stuff there are a lot of them, so you end up on it all the while and no time to do anything else mate.
Facebook is very handy, I use it a lot. Like anything else it's totally down to you how you want to use it. Some of the groups on there have fantastic photo albums, and for someone like me big into nostalgia drag racing, the chance to talk to guys that were actually there at the time. So what did happen to that girl at school you always fancied?

When my 'friends' start to post photos of their dinner (always the same people), or their daily dog walk, which is exactly the same as every other day's dog walk they've posted photos of, or right-wing nonsense gleaned from the tabloid newspapers, I either unfriend them or 'unfollow' them (depending how well I know them in real life and how bad the offence is!)... and now my newsfeed is just full of the car-related stuff I want to see!

Good plan. 20yrs in I.T. and I wont go near it. Not that it matters - they already know everything about me. Everyone who knows me who has signed up has already given it permission to slurp any data it damn well feels like (contacts, phone numbers, addresses, photos, emails, messages - you name it). And yet no-one seems to care.
As a nation we are on the verge of revolt that ISPs may have to keep your browsing history for government purposes. Facebook keep an awful lot more than that and we just hand it over. I dont geddit at all.

I use LinkedIn, but that's professional only and has been handy in the past for jobs.
I have a full time job, full time family & gym stuff too. I'm on here most days and post every now and then. I also frequent other forums but only as a lurker. Then add in Youtube, Hotrod channel and other car related stuff...........I haven't got any spare time.
That plus I see the Bananarama! that the misses gets plagued with on FB. Some of it funny, some of it cruel and voyeuristic.............I have no want to join in and will only do so when its paramount to a hobby or something like that (like if this place packed its bags).
Like you Steve.......lived without it for this long so I don't need it.......
OR........maybe its just I have no friends to book a face with..............
