I think FB is great for keeping in contact and up-to-date with friends and family who are spread over the globe, no one emails these days and I think its great way of sharing news and pictures. Why people think you have to spend all your time on there Im not sure? We're not 12 year old girls, unless you're servery weak willed its not gonna do take over your life.
The ony reason for not using FB is what Morgan describes. Its quite frightening actually but its not something thats going to go away. You'd have to pretty much live off-grid to really protect your data.
I imagine the same people worried about FB also worry about using their credit cards on-line. The pic below sums it up quite nicely I think.

I didnt want to go near it but had to for the local Air Cadets to keep up with their timetable.
I have found it a useful tool especially for publicising the local car show I ran last year.
It is great for car stuff, and old planes etc, just skim past the drivel, and dont accept friend requests unless you know them in the real (ish) world.
I had to unfriend a few who "people you might know" were way off who I might know, and a little worrying with their professions
