Power steering box leak

That's a federal, just replace the o ring

Is it an easy job to change that? I bought a steering box rebuild kit (Edelman 8539), would this have the O ring I need?

Think I found it, I need a Edelman 7910 kit I think. Just looked on Amazon US they are $11.50. On Amazon UK £86!!

New o-ring is about £2 and is an easy job.

Pump is probably fine its just the sealing O-ring that has become brittle.
Remove pump from the car and dis-assemble the fluid housing by removing the rear bolt(s).
Pull the pump forwards to release form the reservoir(round black oily bit)!

Simples...

While looking it seems there is the Federal pump and a TRW pump. It says to look at the rear to tell the difference and looks like mine is a TRW, this is the rear,

I've had to research this before and can't recall for sure but I believe the Federal and TRW/Thompson are very similar and use the same large o-ring.

The other pump is the Saginaw, which you definitely don't have, so NOT the Edelman 7910 kit. The Federal pumps are sometimes referred to as Chrysler pumps. From checking for your car on Rock Auto, I'd say you need a Gates 35190 (or 350370) or the Edelmann 7897 (or 7899). the ones in brackets are for their complete kits that you would need if you wanted to rebuild the whole pump.

One more thing....if you are seeing pink fluid then you may have Dexron (tranny fluid) in there. If you have then I would advise removing as much as possible and re-filling with power steering fluid (usually clear). I used to use the actual Mopar brand but that's hard to get now so have some of this instead...

I've had two old Mopars now where swapping out Dexron for PS fluid has eliminated some fluid leaks. I was skeptical at first, but it seems that proper PS fluid has something in it that conditions/softens/swells the rubber seals and therefore can help them make a proper seal again where they had started leaking due to going hard. Won't be a miracle cure for all leaks but definitely has some positive effect and therefore worth doing imho.

Thank you for the detailed post David. Yes I have been putting pink DextronII fluid in there as I've had leaks in the past, so been topping up with this. Not sure where I got the idea from but I've seen somewhere where it said to use this stuff. Going the clear route definitely seems a good thing to do once I have this seal sorted.

Aft fluid is OK to top up with BUT power steering fluid should be the main ingredient (as previously stated , it has seal swelling properties)
I had the same problem for years, then added 'leak stop' and it has not leaked for the last8 years!!!!

Can I get proper power steering fluid from and motor place such as Halfords, GSF etc so I can just pick some up?

Where's best to get the Gates or Edelman kits that may have them in the UK?

Seeing as your a fellow Essex lad , Customville will have the fluid , and possibly the o ring. Not cheap , but you can take it back if its wrong !

Or , if your not in a rush , and want to keep costs down , Rock Auto are great to deal with.

Just ordered kit from Rockauto, £13.19 delivered. I've gone for the 7897 kit.

I'm going to get some of the fluid David linked from the Jeep place too
