Yes if 100 % guilty of serious crime then yes , if any doubt then no , like the people that beheaded our soldier in london a few years back and shot at two police officers the next day there should be hung with a sign above them saying this is what we do to terrorists in our country, simple not spend hundreds of thousand pounds on court costs,

There's going to be eyes at all the banger meets so to take a rare car out on track and not get noticed will be hard. Then again the plod will do nothing like they did when a rare Datsun SSS got pinched and raced locally.

Problem here is they will deny all knowledge.
'I bought it stripped from a guy online/paper add/word of mouth. I paid cash and as i'm only looking to race it and not have it on the public road, it didn't bother me that it had no paperwork or history'.
'Unfortunately we agreed to exchange at a service station as part of the agreed price, this helped cut down the mileage I had to travel to collect, so unsure of where it came from other than the guy having a London accent. Sorry didn't get his reg or last name. His first name was John though.'

And so no charges can be brought or guilt proven................Sad stuff.

I know it is no good from the point of view of the car, but can't the police take off the new "owner" as it is stolen property at least (so, they don't get the joy of racing it at the very least)?

Yes the police could but won't. In the case of the Datsun, only a handful in the country and only one in a certain colour, which was showing through under the banger paintjob. All i.d numbers missing or ground off so it was a case of prove it's the same car. Despite having been reported stolen and being rare and the only one in that colour. Police very close to useless, they could have at least stopped it being raced until true ownership was proven.

How strange, because wouldn't the opposite apply? As in, "I bought it form some bloke at the pub, with no clear ID numbers" at least mean they can't prove it's theirs either?

I'd have thought it would be a case against the police for some (Bananarama!-poor no doubt) compensation for not looking into it properly.

True........Could it not be secured/detained/confiscated, potentially under the 'proceeds of crime' until ownership is established.

Or maybe to save this kind of stuff happening, the Banger racing scene should make sure all cars have vin numbers and supporting documentation to prove ownership and legality prior to racing.

Unless the banger racing scene has changed it's pretty much crooked all the way through. No way will they be interested in self regulation, and no one else is going to get involved. All this talk of regulation in the scrap metal industry has had little effect, and banger racing is its Bananarama! offspring. Like many other things, until the rich and influential are directly affected, it will continue as it has for many years.

Correct,Blue. My local scrappy takes my metal, offers cheque or transfer to bank. If I choose the cheque I can go to their second office in the same shed and Bananarama! right there.
