More advice re selling a car

Post by Stu Twin »

Next stoopid question:
So I've sold my daily to a chap who's decided to get it collected by a transport company. He's not actually been to see the car but he's paid his money so that's all good.
The question is regarding the V5 which I'm filling in the new keeper's details.
I'll fill in Section 10 with the new keeper's name & address and send it with the car.
But section 8 has a box for me to sign as the seller, and a box for the new keeper to sign. But he won't be present.
Surely this must be a common problem if you buy a car without seeing first hand eg over the internet?
I don't fancy sending the entire V5 form with the car and then trust him to sign & send off to Swansea, so should I just sign on his behalf?

Confused of Hitchin.

Its your responsibility to ensure it gets sent off, initial it on his behalf and send it off, and remember to cancel your insurance on the car once collected

I've had this issue myself.
I wrote an email to the buyer that said, "please send me an email to state that you authorise me to sign the logbook on yourbehalf."

That way you can print it off and you've got some sort of reccord to keep.

Whatever happens you need to be the one that posts the logbook to the DVLA as you can get a fine if it doesn't get to them. Whatever you do, don't send the logbook off with the car - just the green slip.

Take copies of all documents before sending, it's not unheard of for DVLA to lose things.

I would be tempted to leave the buyer signature section blank.

Even if the buyer was present and they refused to sign or provide address details etc, you cant force them to sign it so it doesnt really matter. You will be doing your bit by signing to say its been sold and you are no longer responsible for the vehicle. I would time the signature as well as dating it and if possible, a timed and dated photo of it leaving your address.....belt and braces (or paranoia, not sure which!). Their failure to sign doesnt prevent the sale of the vehicle

You dont even need to sign the logbooks any more.
I just bought a car recently and the previous owner just logged onto DVLA, typed in the new keepers details and e-mail address, and within 24 hrs we both got e-mails confirming new keeper (and therefore tax liability) and also that "you are no longer the owner" for the seller.

V5C arrived about 3 days later in my name.
