Wheels on my Charger.......

while i'm a fan of black steel wheels , ( gives the car a grandnational stock car look ) I originally wanted to fit , torque thrusts originals or TT2 , or daisy mags or centre lines , the thing that stopped me was , to have these wheels , I could not have , the same wheel & wide tyre , combo at all four corners , (255) , with the back space available , & give the deep dish look I wanted , that was safe imo , ( giving enough clearance between wheel arch lip & tyre wall at full suspension travel & lock to lock ,
slot mags , went being repoped back then , so went with second choice ( or 5th depending how you look at it haha) , 15 x 8 steel wheels & 4 inch back space , 4 & a half back space is better , but I wanted a deep dish stock car look .
no offence Lee , I don't think those black steel wheels , with redlines suit your charger , look too narrow from where I am , may be too much yellow too ....

think narrow red lines suit a OEM factory 100 point rivet counters resto

, as we all know , when our cars were new , most of the owners chucked the narrow wheels & tyres straight away , & went with cragers or ansen slots & fat tyres .

your charger deffo looks better in the first picture with the chrome TT wheels , although imo 15 wheels with the taller 60 series tyres look better , on our kind of cars , ( no offence 16 inch or bigger mopar mates ) I have not moved with the times i'm still in the 70s / 80s

think painted body color steel wheels would look too much with out a vinyl , I thought mine would of been to much even with one , seen picture below , ( for reference )unrestored original paint Y2 .

think any of these wheels below , would suit your charger !

just for reference incase its of help to anyone else , this is what a 255 with a 15x8 x 4 inch back space wheel & tyre combo looks on the front of mine . first picture , ( no rubbing at all )

was close though when I unwound the torsion bars adjusters , so the suspension rested on the lower bump stops , then drove over rough ground & slopes etc lock to lock etc , to check clearance , so for a extra margin for safty , I made up my own version of the A12 roadrunner / superbee , lower front bump stop spacers , & fitted dana bump stops in the rear , ( no real need , but i'm nuts like that over thinking stuff )

others are the deep dish grandnational look

that I was trying to recreate , IMO look mean

they have started re-popping Goodyear polyglass L60-15 tires now which are nearly the same size as a 275/60/15 - these are about as good as it gets for nostalgia look - must admit I would love a set of these - if you wanted a wide tire on the front to match a G60-15 would be a good choice , obviously they don't drive as well as a modern radial tire but who cares when they look this good

What I need is a wheel and tyre shop so that I can experiment to my hearts content

I'm a big fan of 15's hence my purchase of wider steels in 15's

I've just measured the rear TT's that were on my car and they are 9.5 I'm not sure how the BS is measured?

Is it back face of hub all the way to the outer edge of the inner rim edge in which case mine have a 5" BS

Stevo.....the second wheel pic you posted is what I have albeit mine a 16" so I could simply prepare and paint them as they've always been a fave in that colour

I think the body colour steels with the polished dog dish caps is a great look.
There is nothing individual about ARE 5 spokes any more, every other American muscle car has them

I'm pretty sure I got you those steels when I still had the shop, the 10's will be 5.5" back spacing , if you want to check - lay the wheel face down and put a straight edge across the rim of wheel and then with a tape measure make a 't' shape and measure back down to where the back of the wheel bolts to the brake drum ( hope this makes sense ) you should be able to fit quite a large tire on the back - if any one has pics of alan tansleys old 69 Hemi charger he had steels with sport truck radials on the back - I think something like a 295/60/15 from memory - I would think there are quite a few pics of the car around which would show the tire size , another size more regularly used is 295/50/15 which I think some people on here run on the back of 68-70 chargers - my choice would be 275/60/15 on an 8" rim though

About all you get over here now since the dirty oil nonsense are Hercules or BFG's - both are pretty pricey now compared to how much they were 3 or 4 years back , I buy most of my tires used now on eBay as quite often there are some good deals on part worns .

They are also not that easy to find in the states as two or three years ago a lot of companies all discontinued their raised white letter radial (muscle car type tires) Dunlop GT qualifiers , Firestone Indy 500's , Goodyear Eagle GT 2's and uniroyal tiger paws all disappeared over night.

You can still get the generic white letter tires from tire shops such as Big O's and regul sport challengers ( wal - mart type tires which I like as they just have random names like superstar 500's etc )

It's a shame those generals in the link above don't have old Xp 2000 style tread pattern as they would be perfect then.

I checked the steels and they are 5.5 BS.....But they're also crap with the generic multi fitment bolt holes

IIRC my current set up rubbed when loaded up on the outer edge under the arch tub

I hate the Grabber type tyres....would love some of those period tyres but sizes and prices would be a limiting factor I'm sure

I might just paint the centres of these and give it some thought

Looking at it from a tight bananaramas view point which colour centres?

I'm leaning towards third right but matt

What make are the steels ? i guess they are not wheel vintiques then ?

I think best bet is paint the wheels you have like you have said

You could also ditch the center caps you have and put the plastic ones that the regular torque thrusts come with as they are less modern looking as well , I think they are only about £10 each , they usually have to be put on afterwards with a 4.5" bolt circle though as the wheel brace will usualy interfere with the cap and crack it ( I've done it

Paint the spokes a satin magnesium colour with the plastic caps as Chris suggests and it will transform the way it look IMO. Or you could get the spokes bead blasted for a bit of texture first which might look good.
