Mopar mechanic/magician required

Post by Ian Deady »

Hello,

I have posted numerous times, on here and on Facebook, seeking advice to get my '73 Charger working reliably. I have tried testing/replacing everything I am able to do.

It is well into show season now and every weekend that goes by feels like a missed opportunity to drive my car and meet up with some fellow Mopar drivers.

To this end, I need to employ a mechanic who understands the foibles of Mopar electrical and fuel systems, and who is able to work in the area of Southend-on-Sea, Essex.

Please get in touch if this is you, or if you have a great recommendation.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Yes, that is the one.

I am getting a spark, carb and timing have been professionally set up. Doesn't want to run. Cranks well, almost catches, but not quite.

A guy on a Facebook group is sending me a new engine ignition and ignition switch loom to try later this week.

I'm currently not working so can do most days if that's any use?

Thanks for reply

Who set up the carb and timing? I only ask because I've seen so-called professionals do some entertaining things, at the best of times...

Sorry for delay, didn't realise you had posted. I had the car dyno tuned at Atspeed in Rayleigh. Carb was re-jetted, spacer inserted, timing adjusted.

Tried the car this evening, started and drove lovely for about 20 miles. Stopped and started with no issues. ( Haven't touched it since it wasn't running the other day.

Trouble is, may not start tomorrow.

if everything is good

and it ran great and now it won't

cold start

turn key 8 seconds or so

allow it to fill up fuel bowls

stop

rest for 2-3

stamp peddle 3-6 times

turn key

as it catches open the throttle quick
accelerator pump will give it a jolt but the open throttle lets it dry out quick

it should start

if its hot and it won't start that's different.

sounds like a combo of syphoning fuel or evaporating fuel leaving the bowls empty

followed by flooding and wet plugs just as the battery charge gets lower and the starter motor begins to labour

my charger used to be a nightmare with the old carter BBD carb.
I had to take off the filter and stick a bit of board over the carb to choke it until I eventually found the correct bits to fit the autochoke

there was nothing particularly wrong it just would not start without a choke
