Electronics help please! Dave999?

Post by db »

My Mallory ignition has packed in.
With Dave's advice, I've opened it up and got my meter out and found zero ohms across the primary side of the transformer (red wires, tested with one wire cut). I'm pretty confident that ain't right!

I assume RS Components is the place to buy a replacement?
OR, is it possible/ cost-effective to get it rewound?

The big question is- how do I identify the transformer properties in order to replace/ repair it?

OOPs missed this

does you meter have a continuity tester?

a flashing light or beep beep

if you connect across the transformer primary and get a beep

its probably ok.

if you want to get similar.

1)you could cross ref part number.
Or
take it to an old school electronics shop and ask them to guess
based on size.

or buy beg borrow a dead igntion and see if its transfomer is ok

id guess based on the fact that a 6al pulses out 400 volts that this probably does similar. Its probably just a copy of the original 6A(L) from 1969.

My guess is Mr Mallory (now owned by MSD) probably patented his ignition much like Mr MSD did and that patent is probably on line

so basing it on a car electric system and 400 V that would be a 12v/400v 33:1 turn ratio

i.e primary has 1 turn for every 33 on the secondary.

i.e similarly sized transformer with a 1:30 or 1:35 ratio might do the trick

you can put new windings on a transformer

but they need to go back with the same number of turns of the same grade of wire with the wire wound in the same direction and positioned the same as much as possible

it is also possible to unwind to the place where the wire has failed
solder it back shrink wrap or slide on some insulation off standard wire over the section where you have now burnt off the insulating varnish and wind it back up again.

many fail at the junction between hook up wire and the transformer windings

Burnt out transformers do smell.... the varnish burns and you often get a bit of oozing

i'll do some more digging later need to pick up my kids now
