garage floor paint recommendations

anyone got any good or bad results with floor paint.

it's new concrete so I know I need to leave it a few months, then etch the surface and seal it

but when it comes to paints I hear mixed reviews

anyone found a good one?

it's about 900 Sq ft so quite a big un !

Second hand office carpet tiles. Your knees will love you forever

I paid Â£2 each for 1m x 1m tiles. I got a few extras so when I spill oil I just replace the ruined ones.

I bought a roll of this from Costco, it's Â£109 delivered. Covers 2.3m by 6.1m long. My garage floor was a bit tatty with chunks out of it. Rolled this down and it's great. I have a double, but just got one of these for the car side and old carpet for the other side.

now that looks good but how strong is it when it is used, with jacking up the car and other works like this.

Got the 50cm ones here. Nip down your local auction house they will often have these for sale in the general and machinery sections.
As DB says, when you spill things just chuck it and fit a new one.

If you're going to paint, preparation is the key. If it's not clean, dust free and primed correctly, nothing will stay down for long.

Id avoid paint at all costs......I've yet to see one in a working garage that doesn't come apart.

For the cost, tiles (office floor or the expensive click lock ones) are a much better option IMO.

yep, as long as the slab has been laid on a mebrane and floated, use carpet tiles. if it hasn't been floated then, if laid properly really any oil based floor paint is ok, they are all pretty much the same in my opinion even if you paint on a dusty 'green' floor

I disagree, the workshop floor at work was properly painted about 15 years ago and is subject to constant HGV & forklift traffic plus no end of abuse from jacks and axle stands etc. None of it has come up and although it is wearing away in places it has held up very well indeed.
My Workshop floor gets quite dusty even though I sealed it before I moved in. I do intend to paint it once the car is back in one piece.

My workshop floor was last repainted seven years ago with basic garage floor paint from homebase on a fairly rough concrete floor, laid without a membrane and it's dust free and only now beginning to show signs of wear.

That's after dragging around a heavy duty trolley jack, axle stands and a rotisserie.

Apparently the Ronseal Diamond Hard Garage Floor Paint is supposed to be pretty good...

Our old workshop had been a pig shed,we had to scrub the floor to get the crap off first. It was allowed to dry then brushed,hoovered and sealed with PVA.
Floor paint consisted of everyones left overs of gloss mixed in a bucket and hand brushed into the concrete and left to dry for 2 weeks. It lasted 15 years with minor wear in footways and by benches but it put up with AEC Matadors being rebuilt,my Latil tractors,ploughs being moved and the usual trolley jacks welding etc.

If you paint the floor ( my recommendation) use 2 part epoxy paint, it is for industrial use and is a lot tougher than regular paint and it will fill minor imperfections.I have used carpet tiles but they move if you turn the steering and they also don't clean as easily as painted floor ( there is also a fire hazard if welding/grinding

All floor paint will at some time split and lift here and there with cars sat on it but just reclean and coat over again easy enough, just dont go buying a 25 litre drum from a pikey that wanders in and find its just some old red oxide tat they stuck there own label on and never goes off,

My carpet tiles have been down nearly 4 years, the whole floor cost me about Â£40.
I've had to replace 3 or 4 due to oil spills or excessive grinder damage. They're very fire-retardant (by law if they're meant for office use) I've literally cut steel on them with a grinder. I had to bin the tile due to the hard brittle scar but no way could you set fire to 'em!
I fitted them properly wall to wall so they rarely move.
They help deaden sound if you have a very noisy car or if you drag a big jack around a lot.
I can crawl around on my knees in shorts. When I drop my gearbox or axle, firstly it gets a soft landing, secondly I can just drag it out from under the car without a scratch.

If like me, you have little helpers, it's a lot nicer/ cleaner/ quieter for them!
There just isn't a down side.
I'm a big fan, you may be able to tell
